If you're looking to carry your surf boards on the top of your 110 then there are plenty of racks to look at.
Essentially the main choice you should make is between ones with removable rails (Patriot, Hannibal...) and ones with fixed rails (Land Rover Expedition rack, Brownchurch...). With something as long as a surfboard, I would have thought a removable rail would be the right choice. There are then 3 main contenders: Patriot (bolted together; bombproof; expensive); Hannibal (welded together; bombproof; expensive) or Frontrunner (welded; bombproof; noisy because the slats run across the car). Personally I'd recommend Patriot or Hannibal as either will last you forever and cost about the same. However, for a lot less money (you're looking at €1000 - €1500 for the above, by the time you've factored in ladders etc) you might consider just roof bars. They don't give you the same options as a full rack but they'd be fine for boards and cost/weigh a lot less. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

Hi defenderider
How long are the surfboards that you like to transport? I'm asking that because the maximum length to transport inside will be around 1.8 mt. Considering that you are not using the 2nd and 3rd row. Both seats (specially 3rs row) are located quite high in the Puma, so there is not too much space for pasengers and boards inside. Quite long tables to put inside the Defender,
Both will be protuding to the driver seat (2.1 to 2.0 mt), So driving with them inside will be a little bit dificcult if not dangerous. So anyway you need a external rack I seen some nets that the people put in the ceiling to store stufs like sleeping bags, coats, etc but I suspect that the resistence are not suitable for put the surfboard tables there. Maybe a pair of frames bolted to the floor in the back and in the front can do the work in a easily way, like an internal roll cage but lower. Any medium skill welder can do that. If they are in their bags most people seem to just chuck them in the back...plenty of room if you only have the front seats up. For sleeping I would have thought you could just rest them on the front seats so they are out of the way, or you could string a net between the bird watching windows to the top of the back door.
The internal rack thing you pictured would be OK for when you are sleeping (although probably expensive just for sleeping) but it doesn't really seem very suitable for travelling. |
