At which point do a second set of wheels become the 'spare' set?
I would be arguing the point - surely the set on your vehicle are your main wheels, and any others in the garage are 'spare'? Why should you have less insurance cover because you have another set of wheels in the garage? My blog - www.anacreinhampshire.blogspot.co.uk 110 TD5 BuildHERE - sold! 110 Tdci Build HERE - sold! Passat Alltrack - 4x4, auto, 45mpg, gloriously comfortable - but not a Defender! |

Stolen from the garage ? or off the vehicle ?
Surely is house or vehicle insurance Can not see the vehicle insurance coving them, if they were not fitted at the time, and were in the garage,,
When they are not fitted to the vehicle ? California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

They were in a trailer waiting to go to the garage for re-fitting. (lack of security)
Spare wheels become so when there is more than a set. For example if you had 2 spare handed wheels such as the Yokohama Geolander then you could justifyably have 2 spare tyres, a left hand & a right hand as I did in 2000. Insurance Companies will always try to avoid paying out, there view is that you are insuring 1 road-going vehicle with a single spare wheel not 1 with a set of wheels on the car and another set in storage for the winter/summer. That is the view of my insurer but as I originally said, I fell fowl of the securely kept clause as the wheels weren't under lock & key (no garage and with a RR axle, 2 winches, triple stack toolchest, chainsaw, knapsack sprayer, 2 Recaro seats, MIG Welder & a space heater in the kitchen I have no space in the house!). I could try to fight their decision but my honesty with the Police and Insurance Co has worked against me. |

The wheels would just be seen as a load in the trailer though - not part of the Landrover? John http://www.hampshire4x4response.co.uk 2011 Tdci 110 CSW XS |

I dont see how wheels stored in a trailer would ever be covered by your vehicle insurance? If they weren't stolen off the vehicle then you would have to rely on house insurance, depending on the policy details. Surely its the vehicle and the parts fitted that are covered by the insurance policy, not spare parts that are being stored off the vehicle?
Its like having a 2nd set of front seats stored in your garage, ready to fit one day in the future. How can a car insurance policy cover those?
I thnk thats the only possible way the wheels can be covered under car insurance. If the trailer was hitched to the vehicle and the policy covered contents from theft, then perhaps theres a fighting chance? If the trailer wasnt hitched, then its nothing to do with the car insurance policy. |

Interesting about the trailer & load idea, but I guess they'll use the security angle again.
I'm trying the house cover at the moment, I just hope the 2 divisions of the same insurance company don't talk to each other... My real aim of the post was to alert you guys as to the possible problems with having extra sets of wheels not really looking at my predicament, but your support is great!!! |
