Netherlands 1986 Defender 90 200 Tdi SW Zambezi Silver
New member says hello.
Hi,

I am David from the Netherlands.

Two years ago I was invited to test a brand new Defender 110 against the new Jeep Wrangler. You can imagine I did not pass on that invitation.

We drove the cars on the motorway and in "rough" terrain. For me the Wrangler was no match for the Defender. I just loved the thing!! Than and there I decided I had to have one.

This was during the test against the two cars.

I have a company car and already own a second car so the Defender would be the third car.... Roadtax in the Netherlands is quite expensive (EUR 2300,00 for a defender 90 per annum) Therefor the defender had to be atleast 25 years old, as it is than taks exempt.

I started my search for the ideal Defender. Initially I wanted a 110 but found a 90 I really liked. It was offered on the Lotus forum I visit (I also own a 2004 Elise 111R). The 90 got sold to someone else on the forum, I was gutted!

A few days later the guy that bought it send me a PM and offered me the 90!! Due to circumstances he had to sell it.

The 90 had been in use as the courtecy car at The Pike Associates LTD. (Land Rover and Marcos specialist) The 90 had been fitted with an original defender 200Tdi.

I made a deal with the seller and flew to the UK to pick it up. A friend of mine liked the idea and bought a slightly newer 110 as a daily driver.

The grey one is mine, this was taken the day we got off the boat from the UK

Since than I did a LOT of maintenance to the 90. All missing interior parts were changed, I fitted G4 style rear fold up seats, changed the rear door, renewed all rubbers on doors and door glas, fitted new grills, wheels etc.

Currently I am in the process of rebuilding two 300Tdi axles to change them out with the old ones. New shocks, springs, brake calipers, bushings etc will be fitted aswell.

Some pics of the car now

What a very shrewd move buying a defender with the steering wheel on the correct side ready for when Europe has to fall in line with Britain and has to drive on the left Whistle Nice truck and welcome to the forum. 2005 Td5 90 XS

You have to be prepared for everything! I did convert the Elise I bought in the UK to LHD though. I think the 90 will stay RHD Wink

Welcome two nice sets of wheels Thumbs Up
I'm fairly new here too but they're a nice bunch and very helpful.
Do defender drivers wave to each other in Holland too? Thumbs Up I built a garage for my Mini
With a place for everything and everthing in its place.
Ten years down the line there's a Mini in there somewhere, and Censored all's where it should be!!!! Ho hum

@ TR51. Yep High standards are a bitch! I bought the defender as a car I could use and not polish. I failed at that... I do really enjoy working on the 90 and getting it to look younger than it really is Very Happy

Ohh and Leidschendam in quite near to me. Funny thing is that there are quite a lot Defenders in the region here. No where to drive them offroad though Big Cry

@DRW58. Yes we do. Atleast most of us.

Small update;

Last weekend I got the front axle back on the 90

And in less than an hour got the rear axle removed from the car. The 4-post ramp did help a lot with that Wink

Good choice of vehicles. Best off roader and best handling. Seems like a perfect world to me.

Welcome!

Superb vehicles. Although I'd suggest that the Lotus should have a roof and the Defender should be a bit longer Smile

Hope you get as much from this forum as I have. I've learnt loads from some very generous people.

Than why do a lot of exige owners take off the "hardtop" Whistle Cool

You are quite right though, the exige is a very pretty car. I just like open top motoring! (amd I do have the factory hardtop with the elise!)

As for the Defender, I bought this off a Seloc member and apart from it being a 90 it ticked all the boxes. And now I actually like the 90 quite a lot. Must say that the 110 looks bloody good aswell.
