That's correct, and with the Mobile Centre relay you also loose the audible turning signal clicking sound. Can live with these two things, but still would be interested for a turn signal relay for LED turn signals which would have the audible signal too. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

You could possibly fit a motorcycle-type bleeper for an audible warning.

I fitted the RDX type from Bolt on Bits that comes with a replacement relay. Works with trailer and makes a noise. The way I understood it was that replacing the bulb in a standard holder with a LED type was not legal and should be a an MOT failure, correct me if I am wrong.
The RDX ones are standard looking and E marked, I fitted these to my previous 110 and was the first thing I changed on the new 110. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW Volvo S60 T8 Triumph 1200 Rally Explorer G0UBX |

As above. I fitted the RDX led lights and relay, and when I connect trailer I still get warning light as it should be on the dash, whilst indicating. I even brought two led bulbs to fit to the trailer, as I thought that them being non led would cause probs, but they were not needed.

Swollock is correct:
Fitting an LED bulb into a candesent holder is illegal and as such should fail an MOT )and even if it passes Mr Plod can still take you off the road). Buying a specifically made LED light system is legal, and when fitted is also legal as long as it is E marked. I bought a complete RDX kit and got Killer90 to fit it - perfect job, all work brilliant and legal. The flasher relay will need changing as LED's inly deaw a tiny amount o power and as such with a niremal relay it thinks that a bulb has blown due to the less drawn power and goes into rapid flash mode. RDX relay compensated for this and yes the trailr light is perm illuminated but flashes when i hitch a trailor, but still have the tick tick of an indicator. It IS slower than a normal indicator but regs state that indicator must flash between 60 and 120 times per minute, RDX flashes as 63 per minute so is at the slowest end of legal. Broken bulb mode of a normal relay is around 160 - 180 per min hence is obvious. So don;t get the bulbs get a kit (plently of varienty available) and keep yourself on the right side of the law. As a fleet manager I have to know these things. TY&GN 10 years in a WOLF, WIMIK and Snatch and this is all I have to show! |

My trailer light is not perm illuminated, it works as it did before, flashes once, as you put indicators on, then no more unless trailer is attached. Or have I misunderstood your post? Andy |

Andy, you have understood correct. When running the trailor light is perm on and the normal one flashes, when attached to trailor both flash.
Right or wrong not sure - will find out in July at the MOT! TY&GN 10 years in a WOLF, WIMIK and Snatch and this is all I have to show! |

I thought the RDX relay had an adjustable flash speed with a small knob to change the speed? I seem to remember reading the set up instructions for a relay where you had to turn the knob until the indicator was on constantly, then just back it off a bit, or something along those lines? Could be wrong though! 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

That was my understanding, you turn adjuster so trailer light just turns off.
So it should not be perm light, try a slight adjust Andy |

1989 to 1998 model says to install, turn on hazards and turn till light stops flashing (both sides of "not Flashing" are "fashing") so choice is either flashing or steady on.
Then turn hazards off and is set. Will dbl check with RDX and see what they say. Not a hastle having it on... TY&GN 10 years in a WOLF, WIMIK and Snatch and this is all I have to show! |

from B on Bs e/bay info
Bolt On Bits have been busy again developing the only proper 4 Pin Flasher Relay for Land Rover Defenders. Bolt On Bits present: RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay No other company will offer you this RDX product. You got LEDs you need RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay The RDX Relay that powers OUR RDX LED Standard Lamps! A British company, A British design, A British product, for A British Car! Why fit load resistors they defeat the whole object of less power. With our RDX LED Flasher Relay your Defender no longer needs Load Resistors! A Standard Flasher Relay works on load, this means it is designed to see 21 watts bulbs, when you fit LED lamps or bulbs the Relay can not detect the load as the LED lamp/LED bulb may only use 2 to 3 watts, resulting in fast flashing which is no good to anyone. So people fitted load resistors to imitate the load of the incandescent bulbs they have just removed, resulting in more wiring, things that get hot, melt anything near them and the best bit you are using more power than a standard bulb set up! Then came LED Flasher Relays Many have tried and failed but we haven't! These often only could handle 30 to 40 watts which is fine for all LED vehicles but as soon as you put a trailer on it would blow or the user would fit the relay with bulbs and blow the LED Flasher Relay. Some have tried to create a 4 Pin Flasher Relay but they state it might put the trailer light on when you are not pulling a trailer plus it can only handle 40 watts ours can handle 140 watts ha ha we win. RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay can handle bulbs, LEDs and a mixture of both on the vehicle it does not care it just gets on with the job! The RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay blows others in to the weeds, why as ours is tuneable this means it can be adjusted to suit your vehicle by simply turning the adjustment knob on top of the RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay. MOT law changed resulting in the trailer light must flash when a trailer is connected and the indicators/hazard is used. The MOT station can now test the towing socket if fitted! Other Flasher Relays cannot detect a trailer has been connected which is now a requirement. Now for the OCD ones Have you noticed when you indicate the trailer light may flash once even when you are not pulling a trailer, well most other normal cars do not put a trailer light on for one flash. Tut tut Land Rover. Well ours puts the trailer light when you are actually pulling a trailer. When you are driving without the trailer and you indicate the little trailer light will not flash. The trailer must be using incandescent bulbs or LED lamps with load resistors for the Trailer light to flash. It cannot detect trailers solely on LED lamps it will make them flash ok but will not flash the trailer light as the extra load is too little to detect. The competition still offer load resistors we have moved into 21st century offering you bespoke products especially for Land Rovers because we drive Land Rovers! The Flasher Relay is in three locations depending on your Land Rover Defender 90/110 Fitting: 1983 to 2001 2.5 NA, Turbodiesel, V8, 200Tdi, 300Tdi, early Td5 (no posh centre console models) Fit LEDs to vehicle Remove two knobs securing fusebox cover Remove fusebox cover Put hazards on if need locate second from left black relay Remove relay and say bad relay Fit RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay Turn ignition on, indicate left or right you chose Turn knob on RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay until Trailer light is flashing now turn back slowly until trailer light is not flashing. Turn ignition off Refit Fusebox cover Refit two knobs Fitting: Later Td5 2001 to 2006 (Posh centre console models) Fit LEDs to vehicle Remove 4 screws securing Instrument surround. Lift Instrument surround up Put hazards on if need locate black relay on far right Remove relay and say bad relay Fit RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay Turn ignition on, indicate left or right you chose Turn knob on RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay until Trailer light is flashing now turn back slowly until trailer light is not flashing. Turn ignition off Refit Instrument surround Refit 4 screws 2007 onwards Tdci (2.4 & 2.2) Fit LEDs to vehicle Relay is located under dash driver side Put hazards on if need locate black relay Remove relay and say bad relay Fit RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay Turn ignition on, indicate left or right you chose Turn knob on RDX 4 Pin Flasher Relay until Trailer light is flashing now turn back slowly until trailer light is not flashing. Turn ignition off Info on DRL The UK have not accepted DRL lamps they are not a legal requirement, ALL new Defenders are commercial vehicles thus making them exempt from DRL until the law is changed it may be legal in Europe. They can be retro fitted to any older vehicle provided they are wired correctly. The DRL should be wired so the DRL is on when the engine is running many take a feed from the ignition but for the OCD ones it should be taken from the ignition & oil pressure switch via relay if you want to know when the engine is running. The DRL must turn off when sidelights are turned on. This is only a guide if you need clarification please consult with your insurance company. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |
