Frontrunner Under Cubby Safe Installation Question
I bought a Frontrunner safe and when I went to fit it found a problem. I understand that the fuel lines and wiring at the back of the gearbox need to be lowered but I also have a massive loom of wiring at the front of the opening together with a couple of bulky switches. Do these need to be moved also?

My trial fitting suggested that these would not easily be moved out of the way.

I found on one vendor's website a suggestion that the safe was not suitable for a Puma 2.4 (I have a 2.2). No mention on the others. I have asked both the supplier and frontrunner themselves for clarification, but in the meantime wondered if anyone had successfully fitted one of these to a Puma 2.4 or 2.2.

inigo - send a pm to Naks from South Africa - he has one of these safes. i think that there is a chap from Northern Territory in Oz that has one, too.

Do a search for the other under cubby safe from Nakatengenda as i recall something about their installation that required cables to be moved.

Thumbs Up

Indeed, I do have a Frontrunner safe in my Puma (2.4).

We basically just pushed the lines (on the left in the first pic) out of the way before putting the safe there.

However, I do not recall any electronic harness such as the one on the right in your picture though, so that may be particular to the 2.2? --

Thanks guys

I'll investigate and see if I can find out what the connectors are for and wait for an answer from Frontrunner themselves.

When I fitted mine I popped the pipes out of the brackets and then moved the pipe clamps from the top of the metal brackets to the bottom and then pop the pipes back in the clamps- this holds it about 5mm lower than the safe.

The 2.4 doesn't have those electronics at the front. Just the large cable that passes over the transfer box- but that doesn't clash with the safe.

Hello Glynn

OK, thanks, that does help actually. Looking more closely at my photos, it maybe that there is already enough clearance at the front where those connectors are. I'll try and move the pipes and have another trial fit.

Had another play with this today.
Moved pipes at the back as per Glyn's instructions and trial fitted again. It seems to foul the big fat loom at the front. The extra connectors don't seem to be a problem.

I tried to move the wiring, but there is not much slack, and further inspection from underneath suggests that it is fixed to a bracket as it passes over the gearbox to the passenger side. This wiring has to cross the highpoint of the gearbox, maybe with the 2.4 it could be shoved more to the side where the connectors are now.

Frontrunner say it definitely fits the 2.4 and they are having a check to see if it should fit the 2.2.

Anyone actually fitted one to a 2.2?

Not as yet. Hoping for an answer from Frontrunner before I continue any further. Don't really want to start messing with that big loom unless someone has gone before me.

I may give up and get the Nakatenega one instead, but it's a lot more money.

I remember Glynn saying he disliked the under cubby safes that can be seen so I presume this goes flush with the cubby box on top and you make a hole in the covering plate.

How much are they. Traders sites do my head in when you can't even get a simple price on something Mad

Even adding it to a wish list doesn't show anything on this one http://www.terrafirma4x4.com/products_php.php?cat=62&grp=301

How do you know you want to buy it until you know what the bloody price is....wheres the grump thread Rolling Eyes

I think the best way to explain the differences:

Frontrunner- Under cubby box safe

This is the one I opted for. It slots in nearly flush to where the floor was and once you bolt the cubby box to the lid you couldn't see it (unless you knew what you was looking for). It is made of thick steel and mounts to the Land Rover by 6 bolts (I drilled a couple of holes in the safe so the bracket bolts also bolted through it). So..... First you would have to find it, then try and remove it which would be a challenge.

Nak- Under cubby box valuables compartment

This one is bigger and therefore is higher so is much more visible. On the plus side it has much more useable space, and comes with 2 cigar sockets on it so that you can plug things in. The steel used to make it is about 1/3 of the thickness of the frontrunner but it still locks so is secure enough to stop some idiot from getting to valuables.

So, if you want a lockable storage area for slightly more expensive items go for the Nak, but if you want a safe secure hidden storage box go for the Frontrunner.

Hope that makes sense?

P.S. I have also carpeted mine since changing cubby box for tray so really is hard to spot.

Can you still use the standard fitment tray instead of a cubby box with these. I really don't like any of the cubby boxes available so want to keep center tray.
