Please can someone advise me what's the best type of lock washers for my turbo manifold bolts? Split, ribbed?
The M8 bolts (10.9) have stayed tight for a few days (re-tightened after cooling) but they're always easy to undo I want to make bloody sure they won't come out again before I refit the heat shield. Matt,
If it were me and I was concerned about it I would source some bolts that you could wirelock with steel wire as depicted below. Wirelocking is used prolifically in the aviation engineering World..... Cheers Mal - looks the biz, but trouble is the three bolt heads are on opposite sides of the flange and rather far apart. It's bloody awkward just getting fingers in to do them up. Might try it as a last resort though

Yep - the same ones - look serious, don't they
Nord Lock have loads of distributors in Germany but none seem to sell to Joe Public Actually... I tell a lie. If I want to buy 500 (at nearly a Euro each), it's not a problem There are a few online shops in the UK but at first glance they don't ship to Germany. I've E-Mailed a few so fingers crossed (or "thumbs pressed" as they say here). Otherwise I might ask a helpful forum member if they would take delivery in the UK and send them on to me Tell someone you love them today because life is short. Cheers Mal - yup, I'm sure I have it somewhere
I'll wait a day for E-Mail replies (or lack of) then let you know Steve - that was my original plan but since the dealer has already bolted (studded) it on twice and the LR studs/nuts have kept loosening/falling out (the original ones did too - I've no clue why), I've fitted a Nak gasket and am trying a less conventional approach. It's currently only very slightly leaky (probably warped a bit) but no noise or other symptoms. I decided against using paste - fitted it dry and sod the leaks Tell someone you love them today because life is short. however should you torque these up right and later want to remove them you will have a job on your hands. 110 xs s/wagon s3 swb soft top |

If possible, that would be fantastic
I only actually need 3 washers but I reckon 6 or so would be a good safety margin for me The ones I'm after are Nord Lock NL8 (M hardened steel zinc plated (not stainless). It's pretty hard to torque them correctly as you can only get a ring spanner in there. As far as removing them goes, I hope I will never have to... as long as I live Tell someone you love them today because life is short. Steve, they just arrived
Blimey - they are so cool - serious engineering for washers. No wonder I couldn't get them from the "normal"places... not that you're "abnormal" of course A million thanks May the sun shine forever on your Defender Have a great weekend, Matt p.s. I'll leave feedback on the forum if they work Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

They are seriously awesome
When undoing bolts used alone, after you break the stiction they undo without resistance. With the Nord Lock washers, it takes much more effort to start undoing the bolts and even then, they still resist for another 1/2 turn or so. I need to keep an eye on them for a few months but I am seriously impressed. No wonder they're a quid each At least you can re-use them...
