You are hereby banished from the Land Rover world!....... 'Don't off-road', disgusting
![]() ![]() Speak to any/ all of the tuning companies out there: Alive. BAS. JE. CSK (Sure he can point you in the right direction). and there are a few others too. I am sure they will all say they do the best kit but all depends on budget etc. I am sure if you bought your own springs and shocks which will really convert the drive will be WAY less than £1600+. For that price you are probably talking race-spec for a high power car like the ZULU (Which by coincidence I saw the film ZULU yesterday after the Wales rugby game). Good luck with the hunt and keep us all posted with pictures ![]() Glyn ![]() ![]() |

Forget all this Les Miserables namby pamby stuff, when they start to sing Men of Harlech at the end of Zulu, man tears come out
![]() ![]() I'm really after some feedback from somebody that has bought a set up from one of the tuners. I know it's not a race car but I live in rural Devon and its twisty and bumpy roads. Your either banging your head off the top of the door or its so bouncy in trying to turn the radio up you end up poking some random place on the dashboard! Just want something to make it roll and pitch less on the road. My budget is nowhere near £1600 but I'm hoping to offset some of the cost by selling the standard set up as the car had only done 500 miles from new. Maybe one of the tuner boys who reads the forums could do me a deal? ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() I have done the poking the dash many a time- then the missus looks at me as though I am drunk and can't do simple tasks like press a switch! Just had a quick look on the Alive site and a full setup (Springs and shocks) come to about £700 + VAT. Plus they (as the other sponsors) tend to give a discount to D2 members.. Just getting set of shocks and springs that are matched will make a huge difference rather than the over-dampened LR setup. Glyn ![]() ![]() |

Just had a look on the Alive site yes it's more affordable. They are selling bilstein dampers but on here Koni seam to be favoured.whats the difference?
What would be really good for me is an idiots guide to what's good and bad and why?? Last edited by Jez676 on 17th Mar 2013 5:26pm. Edited 1 time in total |

It is all about matching spring rates and damping rates..... I learnt a lot about it when I was into fast cars, but it isn't quite the same when dealing with a heavy garden shed on wheels.
I run OME and Koni- it is an awesome setup... but it is for off-road and overland- so might not suit your needs as much. LR for some reason over dampen which causes the 'choppy' ride. Maybe speak to a few of the companies and ask them why they have the setup they sell- Unfortunately the nature of the beast means there are 1 million companies making off-road suspension but only a few make on-road suspension for Defenders which limits choice and keeps the prices high. Also consider what load you carry and whether you tow- it will all affect the setup you need Glyn ![]() ![]() |

The JE set up is for their Zulus, i.e. fast road. Konis, softer and shorter springs, and stiffer anti-roll bars.

Has anybody on here got the JE set up? Does it make a big difference?

It all makes a difference, but bear in mind you don't have a 110 with a larger twin turbo'd engine. Reading other post on Koni, seems to suggest they work better off road and when carrying loads. Bilstein have also been an established name for years and tend to appear more on the faster road orientated defenders. I have no experience of either. As Glyn suggested speak to Gary at Alive, he built a TD5 racer.

![]() Again, like mentioned on the other thread, there are 2 types of Koni shocks. The Koni Heavy Track RAID are shorter and designed for performance on roads/rally tracks, might well be a good solution for the OP, but would need to choose appropriate springs to match. For me I use standard LR road springs, Koni and an Alive uprated rear anti roll bar with super pro bushes. It will now hustle along very well and I am a 'progressive' driver when conditions allow. ....
And the ride is very good as well BM52 |

That sounds an ideal solution not changing the springs saves a fortune!
What is the actual advantage of the shorter springs? Does it improve things significantly? |

I've just today fitted the Alive 'Kit" Bilstein Dampers, Lowering Springs (Although I might have the wrong front springs - Waiting fo Gary to come back to me)... Alive rear rollbar and castor offset bushes (Not fitted the Castor Correction yet).... All I can say so far... Is what a difference... Handles far less truck like... Can't wait to sort the Castor and Check the tracking... Although I think the fronts too low at the moment... (see above)
Cheers Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse... 2013 Bowler 110 (Sold) 2016 Bowler 90 Rally Spec (Sold) |
