Koni gas shocks
The general consensus is that Koni gas shocks are the best replacement for the factory fitted ones . I'm aboot to fit front and back as my springs are coming off anyway to put ma 2" lift on (2.2 110 csw xs). Where's best to buy as eBay is £400 for 2 which seems daft and paddocks are £80 ? Cheers .Keith

I researched this at the end of last year as I was replacing my DC gas shocks (which had served me very well).
As you have noticed, Paddock are quite significantly cheaper than just about anywhere else however Flat-Dog also sell them at the same price and also have free P&P but the deciding factor for me was that they both have additional discount codes on Facebook and on the day I was ordering it was Paddock who had a valid code so I ordered from them.
As for the shocks themselves I have been a little underwhelmed but I think that is my fault as I changed the springs at the same time and the front ones are just too stiff (I like a firm ride but this is stupid). I knew they were too firm when I was fitting them but thought I could get used to it but with no additional weight up front (winch etc) they barely move at all so some softer ones are sitting here ready to go on which should let the shocks show what they can do. ONE LIFE, GET IT!

When checking prices make sure you are comparing like for like -

ie. there are 2 versions of the Koni's
Heavy Track - heavy duty, adjustable, designed for 4x4 utility loads on mixed surfaces ie. expedition / general work - priced £60-80 ish

Heavy Track Raid, still heavy duty but designed for less weights and performance speed work ie. 'rally raid' - priced £160 ish -

If you are looking for good general purpose shocks, with or without heavy loads, then you want the cheaper one - not the Raid Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

I bought a set from flat dog last year. About £50 each. Be aware though they are very hard for road use. Fantastic off road though.

If the Koni's are adjustable - what are the available settings? Can they be made "softer" for more road user for example?

The current price for Heavy Tracks (not Raids) on Paddocks website is £91.80 each, inc. VAT. Flatdog are slightly more. Paddocks offer free delivery for orders over £100, which is worth bearing in mind.

I bought two of mine from site sponsor, Defenderbits, which was slightly cheaper than Paddocks, but only as I was able to go and collect. I was lucky enough to pick the other two up at a bargain price from eBay.

I don't recognise the description of them being too hard for road use. Mine are absolutely fine and a big improvement over the originals. It does depend on the setting though. When I had them on an expedition prepped Disco I they were set soft on the front and hard on the rear, which did tend to be a bit firm when empty. On my current 110 I have them set soft all round, although I'm considering changing the rear to medium as a compromise for towing.

There are three settings available: soft, medium and hard. To change the setting a collar has to be twisted on the body of the shock, for which it really needs to be removed. Darren

I guess that will make up for them being nearly 100% more expensive than other retailers lol. Laughing

Flatdog are selling them at £59.99 each for standard height and £70 for the +2's
http://www.flatdoguk.com/koni-heavy-track-std-height~504

To answer the question of how hard they are... I guess this can only ever be anecdotal given every land rover has different equipment etc, but on :mine: Which is a 90 hard top with nothing in the rear, but does have winch bumper, rock sliders and receiver etc. The springs are flatdog std height, std weight springs. the ride as follows:-

* When the dampers are cold the ride can pitch a little front to back as though its just a little over damped. Its not uncomfortable, but could be better.
* Off road the dampers are excellent with great articulation, damping on drops etc. Cant fault them at all off road.
* Once they have been given a proper work out off road (which my truck spends 90% of its life) then are much much more supple when back on the road, and the ride is excellent.

To sum up, if you were carrying more weight like an expedition vehicle or loaded up 110 then i can imagine they are pretty supple. if your not carrying a lot of weight they are definately overdamped on road, and if thats all you do then its just OK.

Just bear in mind as above that you can only adjust them when removed from the vehicle. Mine are all set to the softest settings.

good dampers Thumbs Up

fair play, it isnt as big a difference Whistle . the devon4x4 ones still look well overpriced though. Got mine from flatdog and had no issues with them etc. obviously YMMV.

I haven't had cause to play with the settings on mine yet but this is mainly due to the springs being too firm anyway. As soon as the springs are replaced I will have a go.
I did play with the settings before I fitted them but to be perfectly honest couldn't notice any difference however that is hardly a scientific way of doing it so when the softer springs are on I will leave them on the standard setting. After a couple of weeks when I have got used to the characteristics across as many different surfaces as possible I will then try a different setting and see if there is a noticeable difference. ONE LIFE, GET IT!
