That's a difficult one to find, with no movement when you've checked the swivel bearings in the tried and tested way then I would be happy with that. I would be looking again at all the bushes, give them a good waggle about with a bar to see if there's any movement. In the back of my mind I would be looking a bit harder at the RTC damper, I haven't allways been a fan as my thinking is that there must be a point in the centre where it has to pass a point to push against the pressure, i.e. a bit like a neutral in a gearbox. There has to be a point where there's no pressure so if you're at the point where it's deciding which way to push then there must be a "dead spot".

have you tried the steering box bolts that attach it to the chassis plus the bolt that attaches the drop arm support 'arm' to the chassis? Cheers

Hi jst yes I've wanted the steering box bolts as much as I dare without threading. As for the other I'm unsure at the moment which unless I look.
I'd be dammed if it's a bush JWL they are literally weeks old. Panhard took a beating getting in but I can't see that being a problem. How tights too tight on rad arm bolts and Panhard. I worry as I've bent bolts and threaded them in the past by being strong. I could perhaps remove the spring from the rtc thus making it just a damper. My question would be why sell it though. |

Don't get me wrong it's not dangerous but there's a wobble for a second now and again.
I've never drove another to compare but I can feel everything through the steering wheel. Every knock and bump. That could be just characteristics |

Your point on the RTC, "Why sell it though?", in my mind they're a gimmick as if you have the steering set up properly in the first place then the steering will self centre but people buy them so there is a market for them.

It is possible that there is insufficient friction provided by the swivels to provide damping but without wear being evident when the swivels are rocked by hand. They can be loose but without play.

I had exactly same problem for quite a while despite replacing bushes and having the wheels rebalanced. Turned out to be the swivel preload wasn't right. No play at all - just not enough friction in the swivels. Swivels sorted and the wobble was completely eliminated. Dave Green Goddess - 1998 Defender 110 300tdi |

I need to sort mine out sometime soon, yet another job I haven't had time to do. Still after 175,000 miles I suppose some loss of preload is understandable!

130k miles. I had a look and have no shims in one side (passenger) so I guess its due new bearings and shims. Lucky me I have another axle I think it would be quicker to just swap the lot

Tough one this - I had a similar problem on my previous 300tdi a few years ago - It took a new steering damper, a rebuild of the swivels and two further preload check/adjustments to virtually stop it. The final improvement was changing the panhard bushes to superpro to eliminate it.
