Did the series on my own and it took 6 months, but that included engine rebuild, the fabrication of a new tub and front panel, welding new footwells and repairing the bulkhead (a pillars and corners), I rebuilt a dash for it and gave it a complete colour change. The defender was a body off and on and I had help and it took 2 weeks at the evenings and 2 weekends.
2K in labour is a bit excessive I think, but I have nothing to compare it too.
It was an experience doing it myself and I learned a lot. I sold the series and made money too!
It you feel you can, give it a go or at least do some of it to reduce costs.

Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Thanks for all the input chaps ... very helpful.

As much as I would like to rebuild myself I just don't have the time / space or know how to do so. The only way is to get a specialist or garage involved.

I've just spotted these guys http://www.tonks4x4.com/customisation-from-tonks4x4/chassis.html apparently they can do the whole job for £2200 inc parts, VAT & Labor! Anyone used them before?

I will send Marsie a pm this evening see what he has to say.

Thumbs Up

With a Tonks4x4 galvanised chassis replacement we can swap your defender chassis within one week and charge from £2200 including parts, labour and VAT. We currently use Marsland's chassis, but can supply any chassis of your choice. You are also more than welcome to supply your own chassis if you have already made your purchase.

Not meaning to pick fault, but... It says "from" so could be more expensive, and it'll be a Marsland chassis. Absolutely nothing wrong with them, but I think they're cheaper in the first place (??), but they are made from 2mm steel, whereas Richards' are made from 2.5mm steel Thumbs Up An engine to TDi for!

I made sure mine would last by waxoyling the box section inside and out having painted the outside in POR 15.

What was your experience. Anything specific you can share about your experience Yobbie?

Probably not a good idea to post on a public forum, but after collecting twice from Durham driving back to London in a series, ended up off the road for probably 6 months putting it back properly and most of all safely!!

I went to Tonks before visiting Marsie at Richards. Tonks big selling feature was giving it a 2" lift using britpart suspension. I didnt even want a 2" lift but it seemd to be their standard service to give it one. Not sure why. And yes they use Marsland chassis. I then went to visit Marsie and paid him to do it all.

Mine is my daily drive so I couldnt afford the time or the space to even try doing it myself.

It's in the right ballpark. Look in the Back of the LR mags for the advert from Specialist 4x4 Services for a comparator. They say they include other bits (springs, shocks and exhaust IIRC) for a lower price but that would be plus VAT so you'll have to work out the spec differences and do the maths

I used specialist 4x4 services a few years ago and would not recommend them.

Fair enough. I wasn't recommending them either, just noting that they advertise a price as a comparison.

I used TJC for mine but as part of a bigger restoration so I can't easily compare prices on the chassis change alone. Lovely job though, used a Marsland. Fully Restored 89 110 CSW V8
