A judder and a weird gearbox engagement/disengagement thing.
Evening all,

Great forum - thanks for all the wealth of info and galleries. I hope I can add something of interest here and there.

forgive me if this is either (or both) something said before or so obvious it'd unsaid, but I have a couple of things I can't help feeling aren't quite right about our 110SW.

1st is a strong judder/ resonating vibration felt throughout the body of the truck on clutch take up. It's not a juddery clutch on the way out - in fact the (very helpful) dealer has put a new one in in case (it wasn't that). It's more than the expected raw solid thunk of clutch take up, it literally wobbles the truck as it resonates on engagement. Using gas as you take the clutch up either negates it or masks it's effect though.

It has been said it's normal, it may well be (i am not experienced enough in Defender ownership to know tbh) but the 2.4's I have driven recently although somewhat (happily) agricultural in engagement, are not 'wobbly' like this is.

Dealer thought it may be A frame ball joint, main and half shafts (had wear to their splines) and clutch and clutch release bearing (had play). All have been replaced and still it remains.

2nd is a gearbox issue. - When you select 1st, clutch pedal fully depressed, the gear engages mid way through the lever throw and you have to carry on and push it home with a definite crunch to the synchro. Again a similar thing happens when coming down from 5th to 4th - the revs don't drop when the clutch is disengaged for about 3secs, and it's like the gearbox is still in drive. It's similar again in 4th up to 5th. Like the throttle cable is sticking, but it's actually keeping the gears engaged a little for a short period of time.

It's a 2014 2.2.

Any ideas/ light you could shed much appreciated.

Thanks

G

How many miles have you done?
Could be the A frame ball joint but if you haven't done many miles I doubt it will be.

Check the damper bushes especially the rear lower bushes.
They have been known to cause a judder du to weight transfer.

Just a couple of ideas. Thumbs Up

The judder could be any number of things but it shouldn't happen

The gearbox shouldn't crunch as you describe although the rev hang is normal for 2.2's. Given you have the crunch and judder I would personally drain the gearbox oil and check for any metal particles. If all is clear just refil gearbox with same oil, if not then investigate deeper.

Thanks. 👍 😔

Was thinking of draining the gearbox oil and replacing.

Good to know rev drop lag is a 2.2 thing.

If replacing the gearbox oil follow the guide, it is not a level plug I.e you don't keep filling until you get a trickle of oil, you need to accurately measure the amount of oil you replace it with as described in the sticky guide at the top of the tdci forum

I'm struggling to see how your dealer has been very helpful - he's failed to diagnose a fault on your vehicle (I assume after multiple visits) and in the meantime milked the warranty process to keep the revenue coming into the workshop.

Would you be as happy with him if you had paid for all the work yourself?

I'd be taking it to a separate dealer, speaking to the PR guy on here and seeing if JLR can't send a factory tech out to get a final resolution.

I think you are suffering from the JLR equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome...

A fair point.

My previous experience of dealers from merc to citroen and all manner in between (non JLR) has meant this pain in the ass situation has at least been approached openly and immediately every time i've reappeared there and then. Citroen would have just said 'computer says no' before looking. As for Merc... 😔
