Morning DJ
Read an article somewhere on the web a while back that answered your exact question - can't find it now ![]() Basically it was saying that if the head was skimmed you had to measure the clearances so that you put the correct head gasket back on and not to just use the same thickness gasket as taken off as it may not be correct. On you second question I would have thought that it may possibly work but the uneven surface of the block would always cause a weak spot on the head to block seal. I would also have thought you would have to over torque the head bolts to get a seal and that would not be a good idea. I am sure an engineer will be along shortly to give you the correct answer ![]() Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Personally I would not ever use a skommed head on a TD5, I've seen and driven some that have had a skimmed head and they never feel right after, well the ones I have seen don't seem to anyway.
And I would always re measure the piston height and choose the gasket that way. But if that's not possible I would go for what's fitted at the moment and try to ,make sure the head hasn't been skimmed. Pete |

Cheers all.
The replacement head that i fitted, i don't think was skimmed (the face wasn't all nice and "faced") but I was just wondering. As for the non-trueness of the block, This was because I fitted this head last week, did 110 miles and it dumped all the oil into the coolant. I initially thought it was the oil cooler split, but this seems fine. I've not pulled the head off yet but wondered if I should get a 2 hole gasket "in case" But can't understand why it dumped the oil. will find out on saturday. ![]() ![]() |

I would be inclined to get the cooling system pressure checked before removing the head again. We had exactly the same problem on a td5 we bought for stock at work it had recently hed the head gasket changed but had oil in the coolant again we fitted a new oil cooler and seals and this cured it. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Oh really? that's interesting. Did you see anything obvious on the oil cooler?
Mine looked OK, I filled it with switch contact cleaner (a bit like triclerothene... tippex thinners!) really thin liquid, fitted 2 bolts to seal the threaded holes up and left it overnight on a piece of paper. There were no stains/leaks the next day, and when I removed the bolts, the liquid was still in there. For the whole of the sumps worth of oil (7 odd litres) i'd have expected to see some leakage even with no (oil) pressure forcing it out, hence why I thought the head could be the culprit. I've fitted new O rings to the cooler and assembled it in the housing with sealer on said O rings. I might refit it with the manifold etc, and run the engine up, see what happens before i decapitate it again then ![]() |

Did,nt do the job myself (i only sell the things) but did see it in the workshop and all looked okay with the cooler but we just changed it anyway.I would have rigged something up to pressure test it with compressed air if it was my vehicle.I seem to remember the oil cooler is not that cheap. 2005 Td5 90 XS
