possibly rear dif whine, mine had it, but it has now settled down.
It was mostly evident when hot and on long down hill stretches of roadway. |

Rear diff for sure, some improve with age others don't, could still last forever. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

No, diffs or gearbox/transfer box typically whine on overrun. Clutch noises on the whole stop when the clutch is engaged and start when disengaged. I get a noise which is very similar to that which you described which is coming from the ring/pinion sets in the diffs, which on my Defender are Ashcroft HD items which, by their nature, tend to do this. It is most likely that one or other of your diffs hasn't been set up correctly. I would suspect diffs rather than gearbox or t-box, but noises like this can be very hard to pin down. "They" say that 90% of all Landrovers ever built are still on the road. I think it likely that if so 90% of that 90% have transmission whines of some kind. If you can live with the noise and it isn't getting worse, it probably doesn't really matter. |

^^What he says, if it's only doing it on overrun then it's a diff or somewhere else in the transmission, it's an unusual Defender not to have some kind of whine to a greater or lesser degree. Steve.

Bear in mind that dipping the clutch effectively removes all load from the transmission - effectively free wheeling with no engine breaking nor acceleration. This could be enough to change the noise. You could try removing the front or rear props to see if the noise disappears, particularly if it comes back from the stealers with no fault found.
Get some locking diffs and have the diffs set up properly while you're there |

Today mine had a simillar problem and my LR mechanic found that the diff lock gear lever partially engaged to H4 with no light on the dash and when i tried to disengaged it came back again. I do not know why it happens so will go tomorrow to get it sorted!
