(Yet another) Rear Recovery Point Question
Hypothetically (now that's a big Friday word!) thinking.......

I've been looking at some rear recovery point options. Not that I hope to ever get that extreme that I'd need pulling out, but you never know......

I have a standard (Witter, I beleive) tow pack, but don't have the ball fitted. I don't plan on removing it, but was thinking of bolting a Swivel Shackle point on. My tow bar bolts to the bottom 2 of the 6 cross member holes and the Shackle point probably won't squeeze onto the top 4, therefore. Do you think that it would be good/strong/safe enough to bolt on top of the tow bar using the 4 mounting points? Therefore, 2 in the cross member and 2 in the tow bar bracket. Hope that make sense.

Here's the photos of the Swivel Shackle point and my 110 showing the tow bar setup.

DOH! Donkey award.

After looking at the photo once I posted, it became very obvious......

The hole spacing is wider than the cross member spacing!...... Rolling Eyes Craig Rogers

If you are leaving the tow bar in place then by far the easiest option would be to bolt on a pin hitch:

You could fit a ball and pin combination hitch too, but they are quite a lot more expensive. Darren

Just sorted rear recovery on my 90 too. Be aware that the bottom two bolt holes in the cross member are of a larger thread than the other four (can't remember thread size, but it was 24mm spanner as opposed to 19mm spanner!) so if you're going to use the bottom two holes you might need wider holes in the thing you're bolting to it!

The plate on your current tow bar mount will be more than man enough to take a recovery point especially as it is triangulated back to the chassis (for those extra tricky pulls Wink ).

I was told that mounting directly to the cross member ONLY is frowned upon so I used a Terrafirma QD receiver hitch which is a bit less of a plough than a standard tow bar mount!

And I know I'm preaching to the converted, but always 8.8 or higher rated bolts!

Andy.

Thumbs Up Cheers Andy! Top write up!

As you say, the arms from the frame is a bit of an issue, but at least I don't need a fueltank guard! Laughing Craig Rogers

'tis a lot neater and more clearance and would be tempted, but can't really justify taking the bar off to replace with another.

So I'll adapt with the one I've got. Thumbs Up Craig Rogers

Andy, that looks fantastic and I have been pondering something similar for a while. I have heard tales of problems with manufacturing failing on these and have been warned off by a user of such a device. Has yours had plenty of hard work and stood up to it well?

I have seen the one you have and LRS also stock the same thing.

Can't say I've given it *lots* of stick yet, just a couple of drag outs backwards when I've been up to my axles Wink but it sure seems/feel/weighs like the real deal.

I bought mine from 'First Four Off Road'. Malcolm was *extremely* helpful and though they didn't have stock on Monday, it arrived at my doorstep by 8:00am the following Wednesday (the same week) by courier and postage was free! Best price, best service and best delivery, I'll shop there again!

Used one of these for past 7 years on my 90 with plenty of use, no problems and at a decent price too....

I've been looking at one of those too. Same issue with the space above the towbar plate. If the spacing allows, its an option to bolt to the plate itself. Craig Rogers

I think there have been discussions on here before re. "Receiver" type hitches, if used for towing ie. towing trailers/caravans etc, rather than self-recovery.

The main point of it seems to be that users should be aware that in general receiver hitches are not 'type approved' for towing loads on post-1998 vehicles, unless that vehicle came out the factory as a 'commercial' body type. For some bizarre reason commercial vehicles are exempt from having to have type approved towing gear - seems odd, but there ya go!

If post1998 and not a commercial then you should be fine for self-recovery but should use a type approved tow point for towing loads. It is not so much about getting stopped by the plods as they are unlikely to know the difference, but in the event of a towing related accident then it might come up and insurance may be an issue. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

How often do you tow? It takes less than 10 minutes t change over between them.

The spacing on the tow bar plate is different to the spacing on the cross member, so thats a no no.

Back on the hitch pin then. I notice there's a 5000kg version that has a 4 bolt flange.

Anyone either know if the plate on my tow bar is spaced for a 4 bolt flange? Or know what the bolt spacing is so I can measure it?

It looks similar?
