Just caught an article on the BBC News this morning about the fact that visitors are wearing away and damaging the wall. They are hinting about how much damage walkers are doing by walking in single file and in effect telling visitors to use the military road which can be half a mile away. So it's more like yes come and look but don't touch!
It is a sad fact of life that our children and more so our childrens children will never be able to take in our heritage and history by touch and feel. Look at Stonehenge, I remember as a kid visiting and running round the stones and being able to look at them in the flesh. That left me with a far more longlasting impression than looking at pictures on a computer. Yes I've been to Hadrians Wall and experienced that as well perhaps my size 6's(at the time) were responsible for destroying many historic sites. I admit that it's a very fine line between preservation and access but there is getting a gathering of speed to banning everybody from enjoying our countryside, which wouldn't be as it is if it wasn't for the interference of man. If the countryside is left to it's own devices and not managed and used it will just resemble a scrubland over time but some people would be far happier if there were conrete paths with a canopy over so people can be herded along to look and not touch. Sorry for the rant but I think that educating kids on appreciating our country and most of all respecting it will do more to preserve it. |

Sadly inevitable, what with the growing population on a relatively small an island and lots of those people plus tourists wanting to visit the same sites. Steve.

I guess they need to keep it in good condition as they might have to increase the height of it if Salmond has his own way. Craig Rogers

JWL - We need to keep it well maintained to stop Red Dot escaping.
i worry that there will come a time when google earth will be used instead of school trips for everything other than a visit to Alton Towers |

You have to let a few out every so often, Roamingman and IAm a Driver are on the loose next month coming down for Convoy fir Heroes and as they will be bringing money and perhaps a few others but a few days of bright lights and road signs will send them scurrying back up north

For a second I got excited at the thought of re-building it. Bit like in the 'Doomsday' film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJMjiCxHLdg
I couldn't tell the difference between Glasgow in the film after doomsday compared to a few years ago when I was there last Glyn |
