I have air con on mine, with a D44 'with air con' winch bumper. The winch obviously sticks out more than on a non-air con model so some compromise on approach angle. I chose the 'tapered end' style as it helps it to look a little less bulky. Also, I'm using synthetic rope (why does anyone use wire these days?!) so I don't need the bulky fairlead roller you have with wire.
I want my Land Rover to look good (in my eyes) but functionality is uppermost when I'm deciding on kit. That's because I'm building my Land Rover to actually 'do' stuff and the winch is going to be a necessity rather than for making my Land Rover look good. It is horses for courses though! The D44 bumpers are awesome . I also went for practicality and that is why I had to move the A/C condenser back about 4 inches and then cut the grill..... It is all tight in there and freespool etc are a bit awkward to get to but at the same time it would be a complete B!tch to steal as you would have to cut the whole roo-bar from around it.
Wire rope v synthetic............... I have just moved to synthetic but am still a wire rope fan. If you know what you are doing a wire rope is better than a synthetic. I am already pretty tired of taking the rope off after off-roading through gritty mud. Even though I didn't need to use the rope the grit gets into the fibres and will cause damage if I were to the use it. Yes just throwing it in a net bag and through a cold wash in the machine isn't exactly hard but when using a wire rope for years I never needed to actually remove it from the drum which can be a HUGE hassle if overlanding for a prolonged period of time.
