Get a voltmeter on one of the sidelight (preferably headlight if you can be bothered to remove one) connectors after it's been standing for sometime. Then get someone to turn the headlights on and then start the engine, preferably out of gear
Watch how the voltage varies with the flickering - it will give you a pretty good idea what's going on. Alternatively, use Scangauge or similar if you have one. It won't be as accurate but it'll also give you a pretty good idea Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
