Hiring a Defender in Europe?
Hi all,

SWAMBO is thinking of organising a holiday to 3 or 4 cities in Europe in 2014, which got me thinking: how easy would it be to hire a Defender and drive around?

We will not necessarily be camping, but driving around the countrysides to see more than the usual touristy stuff.

I'm searching on Google, but so far it doesn't seem like a 'done' thing.

Has anyone done this sort of thing?

Or alternatively, rent from a private owner? --

You could try www.shb.co.uk they do land rover hire, certainly here in UK.

Don't know whether you could take it to mainland Europe but worth asking.

or www.agseuropean.com

SHB say its 'Europes Largest 4 x 4 hire fleet' , so that might indicate they would do it.

And SHB also show some 'historic' ones from the 40's to 80's which might be fun!

Thanks dj, will investigate.

I'm unfamiliar with the safety of Defenders in Europe - how likely are they to get stolen? --

Seems a fair few are being taken according to Landywatch, but whether that's more than any other type of 4x4/car I don't know. One TV chef had his stolen whilst filming a series in Italy! but got it back on the next episode IIRC.

That's a risk the hire/insurance company will be best to advise you on, after all its their vehicle.

Where are you planning to go?

www.afnoble4x4hire.co.uk Based in Scotland but can deliver to any airport the say - Defender 110 is £110 + vat (coincidence?) Don't list a 90 but if they did would probably be £90 + vat Laughing

Thanks for the info.

We will be in London for a week or so visiting various friends/family, then a couple of days in these cities:

Copenhagen
Amsterdam
Paris
Günzburg (SWAMBO wants to visit Legoland)

then probably fly out from Munich

So ideally I would like to rent a vehicle in Copenhagen and then drive down to Amsterdam, Paris, then through to Günzburg. --

It's the UK you need concern yourself with. But in a hire vehicle they should be 'savvy' to what's going on and hopefully have taken measures to protect their vehicles.

Taken from a recent thread.....

"AVCIS tell me that in the 21 month period of Jan’11 to Sep’12, there were 1587 reported Defender thefts nationally. There is no current breakdown by force, which makes me wonder how they arrive at the total… but hey ho

In the period Feb’11 to time of writing, of the 174 reported thefts on LandyWatch(LW), 139 were Defenders, of which 62%, were Td/Tdi’s, 29% Td5’s & 9% Pumas. Overall, the 90 was the most frequently stolen length variant, in 72% of LW reported incidents to date........ but bear in mind that LW is seeing (very roughly) only one in every ten actual Defender thefts.

The Land Rover Defender is the most stolen car in Britain, according to analysis of more than 2,300 theft claims by online car insurance provider swiftcover.com for its 2011/12 Vehicle Theft Index (1).

In London we will not need wheels Smile

So far looking at Avis/Europcar/Sixt/Budget/Hertz, etc, a 3-week rental on an Open Corsa will work out to about EU700, which is actually quite cheap compared to ZA.

Inital prices for Defender rentals are not great - GBP110 per day!? Shocked

But it would be nicer to do the trip in a Defender Thumbs Up --

There is a Legoland near Windsor, about 25 miles from the centre of London:

You could look at these folks. I have no experience of them, but saw a link from the Adventure Overland show website:

http://explorecampervanhire.com/

They do Defenders and Discos, fully equipped with rooftop tents for camping (SA style!). 2012 Defender Utility Wagon
