hi Kris
I'd start by checking all the relays are seated properly and dry what sort of temperatures are you in at the moment, how about warming the start up with a blow torch ? |

Hi Steve,
All relevant relays cleaned, and re-seated but were working as they should prior to cleaning them. Temp is only about -5 at the moment and this began on the ferry when temp was still in the plus (+4ish...) but will give it a go. |

Alternatively, does anyone know the ford part no. for this alternator? There are a lot more Ford dealers than LR here!

Phoenix, if you can't hear the click from the solenoid it's probably just stuck. Get a suitable length of wood someone to turn the ignition switch and give the solenoid a good tap. As your on the road at the moment taking the solenoid out and greasing it isn't an option.

did the tapping work, sounds like a sticking solenoid. Cheers

I once experienced that, though there seemed to be a 12V supply on the relay on the starter motor, there was some resistance in the supply wire to this relay. As a temporary "repair" I installed another relay in between, so the original relay on the starter motor got a new supply now directly from the battery via a new thick cable. The helping relay is activated by the original supply wire. This wire had enough current for activating the helping relay, but not for activating the original starter motor relay.
Sounds a bit fuzzy, but hope you understand what I mean ... Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
In the end I took all the cables off (what a of a job that was in -3!) cleaned them, re-applied to the starter and it it has been fine since. I think the Solenoid o/p cable nut was loose when I took it off which may explain the issue! Fingers crossed for the rest of the trip! |
