Hi,
I'm finally doing the family truckster/camping trip and so I'm in the process of obsessively putting together all of the camping stuff (tray, tents, cooker etc etc) - good fun and never ending. My question is, has anyone installed an additional 12v outlet towards the back of the vehicle (for a fridge) and if so do you think I'd need to run a dual battery? Also, has anyone else kitted out their Defender for long-range family journeys (the beach camping/snorkelling/fishing/surfing kind)? Any tips or must-do lists you'd recommend? Got mine done by makin tracks (Midland) part of ARB. Duel battrey, snork, bar winch etc. Did 2 inch lift but had to return to standard hight due to prop shaft issues. Just ordered 16x8 performance mags and muds before long weekend down south in the wet.

Thanks Allan,
Never heard of makin tracks so I'll look them up. So you think a dual battery set-up is a must have then? Cheers, Rick. 1998 RR HSE 2007 RRS TDV6 2008 Defender 110 2015 Discovery Sport |

Duel battery is a must. Great for fridge I use an inverter of it to recharge vidio cams lap top etc. Also plug boat trailer winch into the power outlet. Real handy

For day trips you don't need a dual battery with a fridge and if you are staying overnight in a park or somewhere with power a decent extension cord saves you having to move the fridge in and out the vehicle. However you might also need some system of remembering not to drive off while plugged in! I would highly recommend looking at Anderson plugs and DIN sockets for any vehicle 12v outlets. Plugs won't fall out of them accidentally and they come with different current ratings and degrees of waterproofness etc. It is also worth spending a couple of bucks extra and getting thicker than standard wiring so you don't have any voltage drop to the rear of the vehicle. Incorporating a fuse will save you grief when you eventually accidentally short the outlet. For beach stuff if you have an electric air compressor for tyres, an Anderson plug saves you taking the seat out each time to access the battery terminals. Cheers Mark |
