X Engineering disc hand brake - worth the trouble & expe
I was thinking of having one of the disk handbrakes fitted to my Puma. Are they worth the money for kit & labour?

How easy is tightening up compared to the OE drum? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

Must admit I like the X Eng gear. Simon is passionate about the gear he makes. In general term he comes up with good innovative ideas Thumbs Up

We have used his X brakes on our vehicles and they are good.


Must admit I do need to get around to fitting them to our latest addition.


There was a minor problem with the pads rattling on his early models. A spot of silicone sorted the rattle out.

Would I recommend them? YES

Mine too rattled though, very badly. Even the silastic trick on the rear of the pads did not cure it. I phoned up x-eng and they talked to me about what might be the problem.

I think the o-rings on the sliding pin and the pin clearance were not tight enough. I stripped them out and silastic the pin into the caliper. Not a rattle since. Bear in mind this part is the caliper and not the x-eng designed part, if it persisted they were only too happy for me to return it. But the silastic cured it.

The hand brake now feels very strong, a standard handbrake is good but it's Achilles heel is it collects a lot of stuff in the drum which contaminates it ( oil, mud etc. )

Some of their defend range next I think.

Was in my secret hiding place recovering wife's Christmas presents today, when I came across my X-Brake again waiting to be fitted when the warranty expires. Only 14 months to go...

I discussed handbrake problems at length with Simon before I bought mine and I was incredibly impressed by his knowledge and helpfulness (about several other Defender problems too). The instructions I have with my X-Brake already mention the silicon fix which I will use before I fit it - hopefully that will sort it Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

i like X - brakes but to be honest the std drum hand brake on my puma works well, but then it doesn't do alot of off road stuff so doesn't suffer from FOD.

however the other 3 LRs which get more use on all sorts of terrain all run X-Brakes and none of them rattle. simple to fit and adjust and they work perfectly. Very reliable. Cheers

You can't go wrong with X-Eng kit. It's all good with some being b....y fantastic.

Simon is very passionate about everything he sells and rightly so.

X-Brake is excellent and I am now not worried about parking on hills.

Try out his suspension kit too. The X-DeFlex is excellent especially when you have the X-Springs as well Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up .

As for the X-Anchor, couldn't be without it. Thanks Simon Bow down Bow down

And NO, I do not work for them.
