2010 MY 90XS, 2.4. Daily drive. Has now done 33,000 miles. I like to be at the front and keep to the speed limit.
Pre - map 11.19 L / 100 km or 25.25 / gl Post - map 11.06 L / 100 km or 25.53 / gl These averages were compiled over 3000 miles each. Great acceleration with map on and now much easier to be at the front. All types of roads, motorways, A and B roads as well as country lanes. I'm happy. My 2.2 90 xs does 310 miles for 55litres empty and 270 towing large trailer. Cost at the minute is about £70-75 to fill. When I had a td5 I did 360 but could go as low as 240. My 2.4 was a 110 but could do around 400 miles on full tank which is about 27mpg I think.

My 2.4 did around 30 mpg for almost everything and on a couple of oocasions managed 34 mpg. Most of the time on a good run he did around 32.
My 2.2 seems to do around 26 mpg whilst commuting, but I've only had him for five days, so it's early days yet. The 2.2 is by far the smoother/quieter engine and seems at least as good, performance wise, as the 2.4. Chris. http://shropshirelandrovers.freeforums.org 2015 Defender 90 XS SW & Helen, 1964 IIa. My 57 plate 2.4 was 28mpg av running solo 25mpg towwing.
My 12 plate 2.2 is 25mpg max running solo and 18-19mpg towing These figure are generated by the fuel card company so are genuine. My 2.4 was way way better in every way than the 2.2. I did get 9mpg once which horrified my boss, i had a large box on my tailer and was running into head on gale force winds and i was in a bit of a hurry. Filled up at home in Devon and had to re-fill at Bristol and Birmingham. ouch If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. My 2009 2,4 Puma has used 8,7 l/100 km scince I bought it 1 yr and ca 25 000 kms ago. No significant difference between summer- and winter tires. I drive approx 75% highway, 25% urban. Fuel consumption is ok, but the road tax is ridiculous, have to pay some 750£ a year in Sweden.

Thanks for all this, will just have to see what is around at the right price with the spec I want as there doesn't seem to be much in it.

There isn't any difference as stock and you'll always get people who will 'embellish' the truth. With all the different 'set-ups' people have the MPG can and is vastly different from type to type, be it a 2.2 or 2.4.
15,000 miles at an average of 35mpg? Good luck to you, I've never got that out of my Puma. Dorset pigs would begin to fly before I could ever achieve that. Even with the driving style of Driving Miss Daisy I only achieved 31-32. Bank on an average of between 25-29 and you'll not be far off the mark. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Sounds about right my 2011 90 hardtop does about 28 mpg I would say, rarely do 70 on the motorway, usually limit myself to 60 ish and don't thrash about round town. |

i kid you not!
I do have 40psi in all tyres and i use neutral when i'm approaching junctions. it's all about technique and it is quite addictive, there are times when i have my partner Clare with me and we are doing a long trip, peterborough (103 miles) or london (200 miles) and she gets bored with me slipstreaming the artics. and cajoles me into doing 70. that brings it down to just under 30. i ought to try folding the mirrors in to see how much difference that makes! let's get real about this, the only environmentally friendly thing about the defender is the fact that it will outlast most other cars on the road despite showing signs of rust far before them. none of us have bought a defender for the m.p.g. figure. i just happen to have got bored of speeding everywhere after having done it for a decade, on top of that, i don't earn what i used to when every journey seemed to be at the limits of the cars capability (and just outside my own probably). |
