United Kingdom 2010 Defender 130 Puma 2.4 HCPU Zermatt Silver
As a very well qualified Chartered Engineer who struggled to get an English O Level, I accept that many people are not too talented at scientific or engineering principals or practically skilled, however I resist the erge to highlight the limitations of such persons' academic skills as such I believe those who are fortunate enough to have well honed literacy skills should be equally respectful.

In my industry a poorly constructed sentence has never killed anyone whereas a lack of fundamental engineering ability has.

Rant over. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper

A badly worded warning notice or instruction manual may well have done just that. Wink

Don't start me on that one! There's an ad on here in the for-sale section, with no punctuation and appauling spelling, almost to the point of the paragraph making no sense at all.

Ok, some may have dyslexia, but there are apps or webpages you can type your text into to sort that out, so not really an excuse.

As was said re: the ebay ads... if the spelling is that bad, it makes you wonder (in the case of vehicles) what the maintenance has been like!

Well Barbara who is the linguist in this household is out teaching today.

However since I have a computer here, Laughing "Honi soit qui mal y pense"

It is the insignia of the Order of the Garter and "Honi soit qui mal y pense" appears on the cap badge of the Corps of Royal Engineers of the British Army.

Basic translation would be Shamed be he who thinks evil of it.

So I am not a linguist but can just about use a computer Razz

Sorry Brendan, but Fowler’s Modern English Usage, says that it’s alright to begin a sentence with ‘and’. My teachers also taught me wrong!

And better than that: Alzheimers is a long, long, ways down the road before it ever gets anywhere near you.

Perhaps this thread is the place to express my annoyance at the alarming increase in the misuse of apostrophe 's' just about everywhere these days on many plurals ending in 's' - even on official publications where you would expect some sort of proof reading mechanism to be in place - eg 'Landrover's for sale'. Most other sloppy English habits are, I believe, due to linguistic shortcuts in the practice of texting - IMHO lol Laughing

Rubbish. Unfortunately inaccurate or poorly constructed messages frequently lead to mistakes and accidents. As a Chartered engineer you will also know that it should be a lower case 'e' as we are not classed as Professionals.
