That's all well and good until you do perhaps hit someone or someone runs into you and plod and insurers get involved. Anyway, I might be wrong but I was always under the impression that the law is not something you can legally opt in and out of at will. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.

You may end up in trouble one day but anyone can opt in or out at will. It's up to the individual if they would like to take that risk

Morals don't come into it.... otherwise we would all be driving around in electric cars with the least emissions and have a special scoop on the bonet full of cotton wool just in case we hit someone...

I have read the whole 'rule book' where it comes to Bull bars/ A-bars/ Frontal Protection Systems. At no point does it say anything about fitting an old (pre-law) bull bar to a new (post-law) vehicle. But it is illegal to manufacture any after that date unless it is either stamped with an 'e' letter or 'Only for off road use'....... If you have an accident with the latter then yes you are fully open to prosecution... but it will be for something like unsafe modification to your vehicle and the fact the bar says it isn't legal is what will prove you guilty.

Inform your insurer- at the end of the day they won't insure you for something that will cost them hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal fees.

How about if I hit a child.... I will split my fine/prison sentence with the child's parents because they have a moral obligation to teach the kid to cross the road properly.....

Glyn's right the most important thing is indeed possible insurance implications. I historically went through the same issues when I fitted an A-bar. Best to check.....

Tack,

Certain insurers are ignorant and have carte blanche reasons for refusal of insurance. Quite often due to their own ignorance there is no reasoning with them either - "Rules are rules!" They state.
If you go to one of the comparison sites and request insurance on your vehicle with no extras it comes up with a myriad of insurers - go back to vehicle details and then fit say a winch or A bars and see how many drop off that same list. I've just been through it all myself!
Thumbs Up

Retro, pretty much summed it up for me. At the end of the day being hit by any vehicle will be major. Making comparisons between a Defender new or old to cars is pure stupidity. Is being hit by a small car say a Peugeot 206 or a lorry comparable. Should lorries be made illegal due to their extra impact damage risk? I think not. Saying that how about a tractor will they need ABS grilles to protect people from hitting the front? They are road legal too and obviously have to be. Chances are you'd get ran over by the tyre instead and crushed. All idiocy and complete stupidity. And one last thing just behind the position of an A bar is that nice and soft to hit is it? (On the Defender around the bonnet lip / just below area) KEEP CALM AND Drill ON
