Ifor williams LM146 rim and tyre sizes? whats best to get?
Hi all

I will be using this trailer to tow a winch comp 90 long distances so id like to get some good tyres

the ones we use at work on x3 2007 ifor 16 foot trailers are on 12" rims and 185/80r12c

but i have been told 13" rims with 195.70.R13 tyres are better?

Whats the forums opinion?

Many thanks

Ive never had a problem with the 12" tyres on mine and i go up and down the country loaded with it all the time. What i will say is the tyres on trailers that are used with heavy loads tend to give up on the side wall or bleb out in the tread before the tread is worn out.

As for makes of tyre, the avons are very expensive so i go for a brand called compass and havent had any problems with them.

Yeah thats what we use on our trailers, compass are good tyres, dont get punctures often as they are used on forest gravel tracks every day and scrub on hairpin mountain roads so the tread inviariably doesnt last long due to the use it get being 100% on mountain roads so ill go for the same ones as they should last a few years on my trailer Smile

We dont go over 30mph so thats why I was asking about prolonged high speed use at 60mph Smile 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

IWT recommends 195/60R12C for their LM146 trailers

We use a LM 85 which IWT says uses the same tyres.

and a BV105 165R13C

Never had any problems with their recommended tyre size.

I often do long runs with mine, maybe only carrying 2 ton but still sitting at 60mph for most of the day and ive never had a problem. In all the time ive been towing my trailer i have had 2 blow outs, both on tyres that where 9 years old but looked ok with lots of tread, in both cases the whole tread bit split from the carcass. I think these where on the old Avon tyres, not had a single problem with the Compass tyres. I will see if i can find a picture or 2.

Just a few pics of what happens if you use old tyres on a working ifor, these where the tyres fitted when i got the trailer so i dont know the history of them so i now have a new set of 5 tryes on the trailer.

Thanks Zinke!

I had similar to that problem the day i bought the trailer so I am getting x5 new tyres of a good make and also a number plate so ill be 100% legal.

from the feed back ive had on here, decided to stick with my 12" rims, have em shot blasted and resprayed silver and shod with new tyres.

Next on the list is replacing the manky floor with some ali checker plate or nice phenolic ply flooring as per original ifor spec.

hopefully scourced some ramps off a D2 member, so all i need now is sides for it then its sorted Smile 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

Another important thing to say is tyre pressures, i always check mine before leaving home and if im going a very long way i will check them half way too. Now where did i put that trailair advert? lol.

I have had 2 blow outs on twin axle ifor trailers

Only at arround 40mph but still hairy if you lose control

Thats why I brought a tri axle so heavy loads are spread out over more wheels

You must make sure there are pumped up to the correct presure of 95psi & checked every time you use it

Make sure you carry tools in order to change the wheel

A wedge of wood so you can drive the good tyre up onto so it lifts the other save you carring a jack Thumbs Up Chris

Sounds like trailair is a good investment then or just a decent tyre pressure gauge! Very Happy

bought new tyres all round on original 12" rims from Compass so a good make for trailers and comes highly recommended 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)
