these are nice http://www.lrsshop.co.uk/content/cor4-110-...perett-kit but i cant fathom why they are so expensive. seems like they are double the price they should be.. about 150 quid for the pair.

Attractive but practical rear bumperettes???

Well attractive is in the eye of the beholder and the more 'attractive' they are the more expensive they are likely to be.

Practical?

A couple of things to consider is how well they protect the rear corner from bumps from reversing into those concrete bollards etc. However you need to consider do they have a 'scoop' under the rear panel to protect it when stepping off rocks/sharp gradient changes. To provide such protection you will be looking at say 6mm steel.

Next thing to consider is will they be compatible with a swing away wheel carrier? So any plans/possibility of a swing away wheel carrier then consider carefully which ones will work with a wheel carrier. A lot of rear bumperettes will NOT work with wheel carriers. For instance a lot of the rear bumperettes available on eBay will not work with swingaway wheel carriers as they sit too close to the rear cross member, also they are made from 3-4 mm steel.

Finish? Practical or attractive??

Paint finish, can be matched or contrasted however damage the paint work when they are 'used' then they will rust!

Powder coat? Standard colour is black however other colours are available at cost!!! Damage powder coat and they rust which lifts off more powder coat.

Hot dip galv? Bright when new, will tarnish with age.

Powder coat on top of hot dip galv?? Powder coat has an orange peel effect compared to the smooth surface on naked steel. Damage the powder coat, yes it might peel but will not rust.

If you want to go 'attractive' consider:

Cor4 available from Derrick at LRS

Equipe not sure on UK/Spanish suppliers

Offroad Tec from Markus in Germany

Less 'attractive but more practical'?

Safari Equipe are readily available in the UK

Hope that helps.

Brendan

I've just had a friendly foreign van driver hit me from behind whilst static at a roundabout in Aberdeen. Trashed his lights and bonnet, slight scratch on the 110 to side of cross member. So,mi reckon these are a useful purchase in preparation for the next time!

These are getting quite popular here in Australia,

http://www.mulgo.com.au/p8_Mulgo-Bumperettes.html

Similar style to ones in the UK but much wider, doubles as steps, solid as, offering good protection at the side and back.

I hope to get some for my Defender next year.

Tks for the link. The Mulgo site says that those bumperettes will fit alongside "most" rear wheel carriers. I have a Aussie Kaymar rear wheel carrier on my SVX, any idea if these Mulgo bumperettes would be designed to work plug and play with such a Kaymar carrier? Most (all) European bumperettes do not work together with rear wheel carriers without modifications. Tks, Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Hi, I'll see if i can get up to my mates and I'll get a photo to see exactly what holes are used on the rear crossmember. This is something I need to do as I possibly want to fit a wheel carrier as well, so I need to know which ones will fit.

Col. tks for keeping us posted abt what you will discover further. FYG, I have had e-mail contact with Daniel of Mulgo, who is on holidays, but who confirmed that those bumperettes are easy to use with a Kaymar carrier. Will try to get that all confirmed after he is back. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
