Petzl Tac Tikka. I used them through out my time in the Army and have mates still cutting around in Afghanistan with them. The Mrs even loves her red/pinkish one.
Battery lasts for ever* and the tourch is pretty robust!! *well, a long time anyway!! Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful! |

The Lenser H7 has a rechargeable version H7R:
http://www.torchdirect.co.uk/head-torch-ra...eable.html I've been using mine for rambling, chicken-feeding, dog walking, and of course Defender-fixing for years - can't fault it. i used to use Petzl head torches alot in a previous employment and they were the best of the time (then) things have moved on!
compared to my Petzl, the Lensor H7R is much more compact and brighter with a better beam pattern (and adjustment) as i found out when i borrowed on 3 weeks ago to do a prop UJ. i liked it so much so that its on the christmas list. not sure how long the batts last though. dont forget in the snow you dont actually need that much light as any source is reflected. something too bright is not always ideal. I bought a LED Lenser H7R a couple of years back. I had it changed twice in the first 3 months as the cable kept breaking internally. I gave up sending it back in the end (after the 3rd break). It has been sat in a drawer since till I get round to rewiring it myself. A good light when it worked but had a design flaw (they even sent me the modified version as it was apparently a common issue. It still broke).
Head torches are absolutely essential items for checking stock and particularly at lambing time. The good old Petzl Tikkas, while not as bright as the Lenser have given years and years of reliable service. |

After about a year of abusing my Lenser H7, it's true the wiring tore where it exits the battery box (my fault). Took me 1/2 hour to re-insert/solder and epoxy it and it's been good as new for the past 6 months. If it goes again, I will replace it with heavier duty wiring.
I accept if I use something every day it will require maintenance (but I wouldn't have accepted it from new). The Lenser can be really bright and sharp but adjustable to any level to save battery. Very good for spotting dogs at ridiculous distances Where are the batteries on the Petzls? With the Lenser they are behind your head so the lamp part isn't heavy. The battery box is almost unnoticeable too. I have a cheaper model with the batteries at the front - nowhere near as comfy. Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |
