Talk of tools is popular!

Thing about the Halfords lifetime guarantee is that is doesn't cover the ratchet mechanism failing. (Wear and tear apparently.)
Teng kits and Cocraft look good.
Must plan that new fancy tool chest to make the fancy tools look good too. Oh and the fancy outbuilding to house it all.

I bought an older version of the Halfords kit below about 6 years ago as a 'starter' set. Looking at the photo of the current one it appears they have dropped some of the individual screwdriver bits for a box of bits and a driver which is a shame Sad

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...55215#tab3

Positive points
- good selection of 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive sockets and bits in variety of ranges
- excellent quality, not a single quality issue for me in 6 years
- great support - when opened my kit had 2 9mm 1/4 drive sockets instead of an 8 and a 9, Halfords swapped this straight away without any problem.

Negative points
- no, the ratchet mechanisms aren't covered by the warranty but repair kits are available from Halfords in store at reasonable cost (I've not had a problem)
- no adapters between the drive sizes included
- in my personal case it didn't have a few odd sized bits or very small spanners I needed for specific tasks but any kit would be the same

They do do a smaller kit too: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...55215#tab1  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

My head says Halfords but my heart says Snap-on. Dear I know for an amature but my Son can inherit them one day.

Personally, i'd go for the Halfords kit and supplement it with Snap on as and when you need to, ie replace the ratchet with Snap on (as thats the exciting bit Mr. Green ) and use the Halfords sockets (the boring bit) ....

And put it all in a Snap on tool box bought cheap on Ebay Thumbs Up

I've got a Halfords 1/2 inch socket set that I was given for my eighteenth birthday and is still going strong more than a quarter of a century later. There's every chance that my son will inherit it Laughing Darren

Snap-On (inc Blue Point), Britool (now owned by Facom), Facom, King Dick, Sykes Pickavant - all first class but probably too expensive unless you either make a living with them or are a tool addict (or have just won the lottery).

Halfords Professional - not as good quality as the above but exceptionally good value-for-money and for serious casual use hard to beat. It's just a bit embarrassing buying them because you might be spotted by someone you know and people might think you shop at Halfords!

Draper (inc Draper Professional), Clark, Kamasa - a triumph of style over substance, and will ultimately let you down or disappoint you.

Anything from China - avoid like the plague! The steel was rubbish when it was a Montego or Allegro, and it isn't any better now it's been converted into a defective tool.

Best advice I was ever given was to buy the best tool you can afford and buy once.

Halfords pro range - even better value with a trade card.

Have some britool as well, no probs so far.

Prefer hex sockets rather than bi-hex ones a lot of brands do.

Me too...I'm a bit of a "tool ho" Thumbs Up

If I think I am going to use a particular tool a lot I go for the best I can get, if it is for a one off job I go budget range. The only problem I've got is because I use tools on a daily basis with my job (factory maint/breakdown engineer) whenever I buy a tool I think to myself, that would be handy at work/home I end up buying two Rolling with laughter . I was searching for months for a 6" stilson, and they are like hens teeth, when I eventuall bought one I now carry it in my workbag so I have always got it with me... Laughing bloody thing cost me a small fortune too (snap on)...see what happens when you start me off about tools, I could go on, and on and on...

Mods, can we have a separate tool section, please, please, with pictures..please Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Optimists say the glass is half full..

Was once advised by a mate (ex garage owner) that a 1/4" socket set was one of the most useful 'tools' to have. Had slight doubts until I had a sudden need for it. Bought a set ( only Clarke) and I have probably used it more than my 3/8" socket set. Not just for the LR. Very very useful.
Just bought £11 windscreen arm/ puller and I can see the applications mounting by the minute.
Also brake caliper/piston rewind tool.
Should we not have a separate 'Tool Dedicated Xmas' for the guys? Toolmas???

This one is more 'me'. Perfect size, love the old fashioned handle and it's red. £250 though. Eeek!
