Dear All ,
have a 2004 110 TD5 ( 75.000 miles on the clock ) , until today I have only fitted a bigger intercooler and removed the middle box and was more then happy with the performance . Now I modified my Defender 90 to a pure off-roader and have started pulling it behing the 110 to events , but find I could do with more power ie more torque . Would appreciate your input / views / feedback as I'm sure many of you around here have done upgrades in the past and by now have plenty experience ... Kind regards PP Postmanpat |

thanks Steve , have replaced the cat with a straight through section and removed EGR .
Re the turbo's , have read about them etc but wonder is it worth the money / effect on the life time off the engine and more important I'm looking for more torque at the lowest possible rev's so don't think the turbo is the way to go . But again open to corrected on that one ... Postmanpat |

I wouldn't have thought the intercooler is particularly effective on a slow moving off roader ?
I'm not sure there is a lot you can do in terms of improving low down torque for slow speed work (beyond the obvious that you've already done) which is why challenge vehicles tend to go for capacity with big V8's and the like |

indeed the intercooler isn't effective when slow moving , only at higher speeds . And a V8 etc I don't even consider , want to keep the TD5 and I know plenty options are out there to improve it just wondering which are the best ie most effective Postmanpat |

The upgraded turbo that Ian uses, IIRC, is a VGT turbo giving higher boost at lower revs than standard, so you will see an improvement in torque at lower speeds. I'm sure Ian can provide rolling road graphs etc to show you real data. Cheers Steve |

Putting a remap on your towing motor will transform it, mine was remapped 3 years ago and makes the thing so much more user friendly. I've just got a stage 1 on mine, the cat and centre box I only took off this year and I tow all sorts of trailers. When I had a big caravan, on the motorway you just got into 5th and never changed gear untill you left the motorway. Explain what you want to do with your motor and a good tuner will tailor the tune to your needs.

My remap was done by J E Engineering in Coventry, mainly because they had a deal on at the time and I could justify the 150mile round trip with visiting relatives. Yes OK having a good run out on the way back did give a bit more incentive

Website is here http://www.irbdevelopments.com/ with contact details. If I recall, Ian and Pete at BAS co-developed the turbo together. Ian is very knowledgeable, and he's ex LR and now has his own 4wheel rolling road. Expensive to travel over, but if you want to go down this route it's probably worthwhile travelling over to have it done properly. Cheers Steve |

I can agree Ian and my self jointly did the TD5 vnt turbo amongst others though I developed my self the tuning for it and do supply it to Ian on a dealer distributor basis so no matter where you buy it will be the same unit if you select a new turbo upgrade, The dyno he uses however is one of the same dynos I use sometimes at http://www.viezu.com/ of which is in Bromsgrove. We also use a Dyno Dynamics Dyno a little nearer to us in Leeds amongst others.
