so how come you don't hear the turbo like you do on the freelander ?
they are after all similar engines ......ie modern turbo four pots units so whats going on? from my experience the freelander seems to be all turbo and the duratec.....well I don't know ? |

Get a low restriction exhaust system. Plenty of turbo noise then.

You could hear the turbo on my 2.4 Puma, standard factory set up. Can't hear it on the 2.2 though.

thanks for the info Gyln
I was talking at a much higher level.... ie both diesel and turbo charged with hp common injection (nothing more than that really) - still don't understand how one sounds so much higher pitches / turbo whistle compared to the other? |

The devil is in the detail. The sound of a turbo in a Defender is probably swamped by road, wind and general engine noise. The Freelander engine is very quiet with the bonnet closed, so perhaps the higher frequency noise of the turbo spooling up is able to penetrate more easily?
Freelanders and Defenders are totally different vehicles in terms of structure, sound proofing, engine packaging and just about everything else, so why should the sound transfer from a vaguely similar engine configuration be the same? as hinted in the title.... I fully appreciate the vehicles are like chalk and cheese and for that reason I would have expected the turbo noise to be more obvious on the defender.
with the sound proofing I'd have expected not to hear anything from the freelander - and what can be heard I've have expected it to be heard even more on the defender. Perhaps as you've said its down to frequencies and perhaps high frequencies penetrate the sound proofing more easily ? |
