I recently did this mod on my Feb 2012 2.2 Defender key. I donīt know if this is what you mean by a new Puma key. It doesnīt work as good as I had hoped. The range of the remote is dramatically reduced. Beforehand I could lock or unlock the car from any angle, up to about 12 metres from the vehicle. Now I have to be within a metre of the vehicle and hold the key at shoulder level to be sure it responds. It appears to be related to the how close the metal key base is to the transmitting part of the remote circuit board. If I split the two halves of the remote casing, the range returns. The moment the two are together the range is gone. The key is tidily glued into place, with a couple of mm distance to the circuit board and only 1mm distance to the inside of the remote casing. Nothing is touching the board. Has anyone else done the mod on a 2012 or later Defender? 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

Is this the same as pre 2012? On the spare remote is a label with the nine digit code unique to my vehicle, and the date (of issue) 05/11/11 - 5 Nov 2011.
I have tried seperating the remote casing halves a little to simulate attaching the key further away from the board, and it doesnīt improve the range significantly. Like I said, works fine when the key isnīt near it. Apart from the poor range, the modded key works wonderfully well. I had exactly the same problem - didn't transmit with the key assembled (no shorts etc.)
Pity - clever idea and would have been nice... Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Thanks ZeDefender. Did you experience the problem with a Puma key?
This afternoon I had another go at solving the problem...... and have found a solution. In my case the remote worked, but the range was virtually nought. The base, or tongue of the metal key obviously seemed to be the problem, I removed the key from the remote casing and identified at what point the tongue shielded the remote, and stopped it functioning. The only possible solution appeared to be to cut away some of the tongue, leaving hopefully enough material to be able to fix it solidly into the casing. I cut and filed, a little at a time. The range improved and improved. I kept going until I pretty much had the 12 metre range that the original settup had offered. Thereīs not much of the tongue left, but using epoxy glue to bond it in, it feels rock solid once assembled, and works great! Has no one else had this problem with a Puma key? 2011, 2012 or later. Anyway, very pleased with the result. Here it is. Electrical tape didnīt improve the range at all on mine. Tried that to begin with. I reckon the later remotes have a different aerial or something, and are more sensitive to the signal being shielded by the key. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,
