Martin, I'm not aware of any complaints elsewhere. I've ran a forum before, that died when I sold my 'proper off the road 90', I'm a member of a lot of Land Rover and 4x4 forums worldwide.....
I 'frequent' 2 forums, here and ExPo. They are in my opinion, the best. You do a great job, that I think it's fair to say, is made easier by all that resides here. Not everybody can please everybody at all times. I saw Glyns picture, I've seen it and worse stuff before, I chose not to comment, it neither offends or amuses me, it's just another picture on the internet. I think your hands are tied to lock this thread, as the title says, Freedom of Speech.. But I won't blame you if it gets locked.... Nothing more to see here...move along. |

To keep it short...I think this forum is excellent. Its members are (generally) helpful, intelligent, humorous and civil. That is not so common in other forums (I can only compare with 4 others - 1 in UK, 2 in Germany and 1 in US). I would like to think that is due to our common interest in Defenders but also due to the helpful, intelligent, humorous and civil way the forum is moderated. Some days this forum is my lifeline (mechanical and psychological) and I hope I may be part of it for a long time yet. That's not creeping - it's God's honest truth. I sometimes try to bring reason to light but if I have have unintentionally been part of the "irritation" - I apologise. Thank you Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I just been told that certain members have pointed to this thread specifically on other forums and on Facebook as being entirely indicative of how this forum is run and how dreadful the forum is.
It is incredibly upsetting that people elsewhere are being directed to a single thread, and a single post intended by the original poster to cause a reaction in that thread, as being representative of the forum as a whole when all involved know full well that is absolutely NOT the case. The 170,000+ on-topic posts here appear to count for nothing to those few vocal people out there who have no interest in discussing issues in an adult manner but would rather discredit an entire community on the basis of a tiny handful of posts. It is IMPOSSIBLE to keep everyone completely happy all the time when running a forum, but I do listen to and act on problems and criticism. I would hope that the positive factors of the forum would outweigh the negatives for the majority, so I am beginning to feel that this is a witch hunt being carried out by a few. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

I'm a member of some other LR forums around the world (and some more not LR related) and I can tell that this is the best forum on the WWW that I know! Very helpfull, fun and educated members (so far! )
For some reason I'm an inactive member on almost every other forum by now....apart from this one and a Portuguese one! All I can say, again, is keep up the great work you're doing here Martin! You can't please everyone! The voice of a few canot destroy the good work done around here! Martin, I'm a member of three other UK land rover forums were my user name is different to the one I use here. On these forums I have yet to hear of any real derogatory remarks against you or this forum other than the usual, its full of snobs with too much money. Unfortunately now for an easy life on D2 it is not worth posting on certain threads that sponsors on here promote when you have a different opinion/view of that product etc. Usually what happens is that the sponsors mates etc jump in and a grand contest starts up instead of a balanced debate. That is my particular bug bear on this forum, so why did I not complain? In my view, as you actively moderate this site I feel as the moderator the onus is then upon you to ensure that the thread stays on topic and does not degenerate into a contest, however most people on here accept that you are but one man with many responsibilities that take precedence over a perceived contest and hence IMHO that is why these posts appear from time to time. The fact that these posts come up every now and then shows you that the membership is committed to this forum and as such feel having a moan or being less active in posting or whatever is their only recourse short of leaving altogether, all done I'm sure in the hope of making it a better place to visit and to finally air any supposed/real grievances felt. This is a great forum in my opinion, the tech problems people have are a great way of helping us all understand our defenders in greater depth. Just my tuppence worth.
EDIT: Hope this answers your pm I have just read. |

Ok back on topic.
Is what the OP says true? For me not being a member that long and not having a shiney new defender, I can see where his comments come from. But however I can also see why some suppliers are pushing their products and the pricing does seem high, at the sametime I can understand why suppliers defend the price and product in question. At this moment in time for me 'Do I want it?' oh yes please.......can I afford it?.....No! But if things were to change......? Then what would I do? Easy........ Throw out a challenge to site sponsors and product suppliers to suggest products/Mods and why we should consider choosing said product/mod. Only one product/mod I would dearly love to have would be speaker lights, then the rest you would have to justify. Maybe we should have a post to challenge the site sponsors and product suppliers to offer there wares to improve/update a defender? I hope I haven't upset any site sponsors or product suppliers. I've read a lot of posts and have got some great idea's from updates and mods done to vehicles, and hope to read many more. Cheers Neil. |

All,
As the OP to this thread, and having been away for a few days to come back and find another 5 pages of debate, I am quite astonished by the support and similar feelings felt by other members, it shows I wasn't far from the mark. However, I want to make it clear that this thread was never a personal attack on Martin, although it may have been perceived that way (by Martin too). If it came across that way, I apologise. As someone in the many pages asked why a Moderator on another of Martin's forums would bring this up, I would say to them, this is EXACTLY why I brought it up to everyone's attention. Reporting a post to Martin, sending a member/sponsor a PM saying something directly can only do so much and an issue can be effectively hidden from view of members who may also feel the same - just as we have seen here. I don't know what that photo was, I never got to see it, but it clearly stirred up lots of emotion. it's a shame that this has been taken as a overall picture of this forum in a viral manner., on other forums and social feeds. Let me point out, I LIKE THIS FORUM , and every other one of Martin's forums. I have had some fantastic help from guys on here who were not sponsors, who helped off their own back cos like me, they love Land Rovers. The same thing happens on the Range Rover forum, and I would suspect on the D3/4 forums etc etc. There is a mountain of experience and information on these forums that can't be found or bought elsewhere, and as Martin said, over 170,000 posts to look through on Def2 alone and 152,000 on the RR forum. As far as I am concerned, as long as I don't get members/sponsors ranting at me cos I don't love their products/favoured supplier and we can share hints, tips and information, I'm a happy camper. If you look at my "My Defender" thread it's all about detailing what I've done to mine so that others can benefit too, as they have and have told me. I do the same on the RR forum, one particular thread has helped people all over the world fix a common issue with a rubbish rear screen washer motor. THAT'S what I love, helping people, and finding help when I need it. Please, lets stop the bickering now and move on, I think we have collectively made a point that Martin has taken under his wing. Let's get back to talking about the cars now. Martin, please lock off this thread. 2016 D4 HSE 1998 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF 1982 Series 3 SWB Petrol Last edited by RRUK on 24th Nov 2012 9:52pm. Edited 2 times in total |
