I removed the lock nut and replaced with a normal nu. Far too many stories of people who get a flat in the middle of nowhere and then the lock nut strips and they end up being stuck.
Of course, it helps that in Africa, no one is stupid enough to steal a Defender - they know they will not get far 
Yup, I did the same. Never heard of a defender getting stolen in South Africa. Seems like defenders get stolen in UK like toyotas get stolen in South Africa
