I don't see why you don't have the right to ask... It's not like your asking him if he's a law breaker. If he is a farmer then he would be entitled to use red IF he chose to but doesn't mean he has. I guess it depends on his use too just because he's a farmer doesn't mean it's for farm use it could be private instead and only use regular white. The way I see it and I assume the law too. Business use on farm / farm vehicle = red personal use non business regular white.
Red diesel quality I believe is slightly worse due to being for agricultural use only. Or this is how I understand it. (anyone that knows differently feel free to correct me) NEVER SURRENDER! ⛽️🛢️👨🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧 |

Get a receipt from the farmer with mileage on it... then keep every fuel receipt

Red diesel wont have caused any damage, its basically the same product as white diesel but with a dye and chemical 'fingerprint' added.
Only thing it would of lacked is posibly a few additives/enhancers .. but nothing to cause concern over engine wear/damage. Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

The cetain rating of red is lower than that of derv which is the equivalant of octain in petrol the bigger the number the bigger the explosion in the cylinder and more power, down side dettonation in diesil and pinking in petrol. If run on red it would seam under powered and smoke a bit more than standard (black smoke soot levels) as the burn is not so hot, Unlikely to have any damage except leave red dye in the system for months if not years. As long as you get a recept from the seller stating the date and mileage when sold to you and then if you keep every recept for diesil with the mileage recorded if you were to get customs dipped you can prove in a court it was not you who put it in there it was the previous owner.
Spin the filter off and see whats in the bottom of it, the red always sinks to the bottom diluted to a pink haze. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. Engine will be fine. Red diesel is the same as road diesel but with a colour additive for HMRC purposes.
The problem is it takes a while for the colour to disappear. Might be worth flushing tank with clean fuel or run until nearly empty and completely fill with fresh fuel for a few months. Edit As Greeni and noworries says  2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

When I went and raided an engine for some bits for the 3.2 the engine I took the parts from had seized and was swapped but as I took the parts off it had blood coming from the fuel pipes I did ask but they didn't know 2015 2.2 tdci hardtop xs

I no farmers can register a vehicle as farm use and run no tax and red diesel so long as it only travels one mile from the farm land. I no a few who do this and im sure one is a puma used during the shooting season, the others are deff td5's. being a farmer i can tell you most farmers dont run red- i am a farmer and i would not run it, its not worth the risk-it is not that much cheaper anyway. I have a 2011 fendt tractor worth over 95000 and as with most tractors these days it has a tdci engine with all the emittion bull and it runs gallons of red no problems, as has been said the power might be less. You could ask the guy but lets face it he will say no.
I cant see how you can get in to trouble if a trace of red is found in a second hand vehicle. If you get stopped with a full tank of the stuff mind you they wouldnt be happy bunnies. I dont no much on vehicles but im sure the puma engine runs worse fuel around the world. |

My understanding is that red diesel can not be used in a road going vehicle which goes on the public highway. There are excepted vehicles however but it would be difficult to see how most Defenders would come under the excepted catogry.
Do HMRC dip vehicle tanks? In this part of West Yorkshire HMRC vans are regularly seen. They operate in conjunction with Vosa and the police. Brendan |

you can run landrovers on farm use and have them on red, they need no mot, but have to be road worthy
and if you get stopped round here they dont dip the tank, instead they poke a probe up the exhaust  |

My mum rang me many years ago " i am in Asda car park this man in a big white van wants to test my diesil " "what does it say on the van mum?" " customs and excise" "yes mum and dont argue with the nice man" then i had to spend most of that night explaining what red diesil was. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I would have thought a defender would have been one of the easier vehicles to be excepted. As i said the vehicle once registered can only travel one mile from the farms land. It becomes a farm only vehicle like a quad bike. Farm vehicles can only run red diesel if working for the farm for example if i was to start towing a trailer with cars on it then i would have to run white. Anyway this was only to show that i no of defenders running it with no problems. Yes I have seen a few vans around my area checking tanks, a few years ago they started checking vehicles at most of the markets- i had a nice smug smile as i watched others flinching and looking awkward lol. i think this cleaned most of the "users" out and as i said i no of no one in my area that uses it. Anyway red diesel-no no. so now we no the law, my opinion is that if it has has red diesel in it then im sure it wont have affected the engine. If its running fine and the price is right then i wouldnt let it put me off.

In the days when a trip to France would pay for its self, due to the differential in diesel prices, I went over on the ferry to stock up on booze. Arriving at customs, I was surprised to find myself pulled over for a fuel inspection. I was told that it was because a local garage, in Kent, was selling red diesel to anyone.
I did say I was going over on empty, in fact the on board computer had given up on predicting when I would run out as it wasnt accurate under 7 miles. It was that empty. So two customs men put a long tube down the filler and started pumping the hand pump. Nothing came out except a few bubbles. They then made a big song and dance about putting the drip (yes only one) on a standard piece of white card to examine the result(s). It was clear. Not being a happy bunny at the stupid delay, I said could you put all my fuel back as I need it to get to a filling station in France. They didnt laugh. I did. Merlin |
