The story.
2010my 90 XS. Corrosion on bumper and passenger side step. Not unusual! Photos taken in August. I was on holiday after so did not check until back home in September. Apparently awaiting a photo of car rear. Blew my top as no one had contacted me. Anyway, replacement approved. Bumper and sidestep ordered. Sidestep on back order. End of October suggested by body shop, Land Rover Approved but different company to dealer, that Land Rover Customer Services be contacted. Did so and part arrived within 1 week. Went for fitting this week, while I waited. Took just over 1 hour. Car ready. Checked bumper -OK. Checked side step - still dirty. Oh no. Checked other side - nice and clean. Wrong side replaced. Paper work and part supplied to body shop was wrong. New photos taken. New warranty claim in process. When I got home emailed Service Manager at Dealers. Complaining about the whole affair. Also informed L R Customer Services. Email this pm from Service Manager. Apologies - cannot explain what happened but promised to sort it out. Other side step will be replaced and NEXT service on the house. So I have had bumper replaces. Will have both side steps replaced and a free service, saving me a few hundred pounds. Would be very worried having my Defender serviced there Sounds like they might be able to put new oil in the screenwash reservoir and the screenwash in the engine.... You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I'm very happy with the servicing at the dealers, but on this occasion I think the problem arose because of a new Service receptionist who decided to describe the Step as the R side, when she was standing at the front of the vehicle. Convention would be from Drivers perspective or use NS or OS to describe the location. Workshop is very good so I have no fears there. LANDYWATCH

Don't forget the corrosion warranty is a lot longer than the mechanical warranty. Just make sure you have the Annual Free Corrosion check at the Dealer for the duration of the 6/7 year warranty to keep it in force. If you wish! LANDYWATCH

If I have it right, the rust guarantee during years 4/5/6 only covers "perforating" rust, not surface rust. Don't think perforating rust is so common at all, most rust will be surface, so better to claim within the first 3 years.

If the paint is bubbling then the rust is covered. In my opinion you could only have surface rust if the paint layer is damaged first otherwise the rust coming from underneath must be due to poor preparation during manufacturing. So rust on the leading face of the bumper would probably be due to stone damage, hence surface rust and not covered, whereas rust on the rear of the bumper, where it is protected from stone damage, would be poor manufacturing and classed as perforating. Oh no it's not!!!!! I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here WelshGas....This is by no means directed at you, but......Your opinion counts for nowt! It is the opinion of the dealer that matters....I had a similar issue on my 08 just recently. Q.....Rear panels below rear windows. In 'your opinion' covered or not? Bearing in mind paint is only covered for 3 years and corrosion for 6? My vehicle being four years old.... A....NOT COVERED...... Both sides bubbling paint....Had one side resprayed less than a year previous under warranty. Body shop would carry out retreatment on one side only under their own guarantee. This time they would treat and seal it which is not in the remit of Land Rover paint repair procedure. I would duly supply both the sealant and rust treatment mediums myself. Other side I would have to pay for myself according to the 'Gospel' of my local dealership Westovers. WTF??????? "I think not" I informed them and sprung the fact one side had been done by their very own bodyshop only 11 months previous! Point is if you shine a bright torch under the lip of the panel there is no paint so how can it be a paint issue? I took this point of principle to Land Rover Customer Services and a deal was brokered where I was compensated by other means for having to shell out for the paintwork myself due to the fact they could see I had been a loyal Land Rover customer for many years. Ultimately as mentioned it doesn't matter what the owner's opinion is. The decision lies with your Dealer or Land Rover Customer Services. It is always best fighting your corner and taking it to the hgher authority if not happy. Unlike a lot of the tales of woe, this one did have a happy ending as thanks to Land Rover Customer Services I left the phone happy and from a financial perspective better off for having paid for the repair myself.... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

In my opinion and that of a legal colleague that is a manufacturing defect and hence covered under the terms of the warranty, and I have proved it so with another manufacturer. It doesn't matter a damn what the dealership thinks it's what the Law says that matters. Trading Standards are your friend in something like this and adverse publicity is extremely powerful in the Internet age. If there is no damage and there is rust appearing within the warranty period then it is a manufacturing fault and hence repairable at no expense to the owner. LANDYWATCH
