Wow, thanks for all the comments and advice.
It's all appreciated. I've used Tirfors before but never a winch! I've only used Tirfors for hung up trees, never for off roading. I've a selection of pulleys and rated strops etc. I will speak to the guys you've mentioned. Need to get the vehicle first mind! Should be this week.

I believe with winches you pay for what you get I don't think there's a better winch bumper than the d44 winch bumpers extremely well made also the winch side of it I've had warn winches Gigglepin winches and I've gone back to a tds 9.5 goldfish probly the best priced and quality winch for the money and it can be specked up to how you want it there is a lot of winch challenge people out there that start with a tds then go on wards and upwards but then the tds ends up on the back or even in the middle of the truck

Winch choice seems to be very personal! I am a big fan of the Superwinch Husky - properly built with phospher bronze worm and wheel gearing (so no reliance on friction braking), equally good paying out as winching in, and British made. Also very reliable (I have three and have never had one let me down). The downside is the price, but for an electric winch I reckon it is as good as you can get. It is a fairly slow winch, but for most applications this is a benefit.
I also have a Warn XD9000 on the Disco and compared to the Husky it is complete rubbish and I will never buy another (it's probably discontinued by now anyway, I don't really know). It is poorly finished, corroding externally, the solenoids don't like not being used, and the line speed is too fast for almost everything (it is a pain having to rig a block simply to slow the winch down). Never again. Some time ago the choice was simply between Fairy (now Superwinch) and Warn, now there are many good winches available including Goldfish, Red, etc., many of them being extremely good value. I think really that the question "which winch should I buy" is now as impossible to answer as "which tyres should I fit"! It all depends on the depth of your pockets and your intended use. Agree with the D44 bumper comment above though, excellent products. |

quite like the idea of this - a major issue with drum winches is getting the line to spool on correctly under load as it is nearly always a less than ideal angle you are pulling at. |

Over the years many people have tried to come up with paying-on systems suitable for use on small vehicle winches and none has yet been successful. It is not difficult to come up with a system, but to come up with one which is reliable, compact, cheap and light is very hard. Correct rigging and the investment of some time setting up will generally provide a satisfactory alternative. It all comes down to managing your fleet angle correctly. |

As with lots of things you will seldom get complete agreement about what is the best winch/tyre/4x4 etc.
Have a good hard think about what YOU need from a winch, for instance if winch comping then line speed might be major consideration, budget might be a major consideration or physical size of winch. However a GOOD winch set up will not come cheap by the time you have factored in winch bumper, possibly synthetic line/twin batteries/extension lines/snatch blocks etc etc. Do not forget safety and possibly some training as well I like the D44 winch bumper on our red 110 High level tapered etc. Have been a bit disappointed with D44 winch bumper and heavy duty rear bumper on D2. Not galvanised and now rusting So one maker, one customer giving both a and on different items.
Different people will have different experiences with the same maker. I am quite hapy with our Warn winches, someone else not happy with theirs. So carefully decide what is right bit of kit for your needs and not what someone is trying to sell you. Brendan |
