Power Loss - Dodgy Fuel?
On the way home from Peterborough yesterday, about 10 mins after refilling an almost empty tank, I felt a momentary power loss while at motorway speed. Sorted itself out after a few seconds and made it the rest of the way home.

This morning, it happened a couple of times. I resolved to book it in at the dealer in the morning.

This afternoon on the way home, it happened a few more times and then rapidly degenerated to no power at all. Pressing throttle had no effect either in gear or in neutral. Power would then return 30 seconds later and everything fine until the next episode a few minutes later.

Decided I didn't want to risk this on the fast road for the last 10 or so miles home and called LR assist.

First suggestion (over the phone) was a loose hose. Checked the turbo hose and mine had not moved any further away from its previously marked position. When LRAssist turned up, I mentioned my suspicion that it might be fuel related and he drained the fuel filter and tried again. Drove around the block and it was fine until 5 mins in, complete loss of power again.

Trailer sent out and I was brought back home this evening. They will collect again in the morning and take to the dealers to investigate.

Perhaps I should wait until the dealers have read the codes and carried out whatever diagnosis they need to do, but wondered if the collective judgement on here might help me speed them on the way to getting it fixed and back to me.

So, does this sound like a fuel problem or are there any other likely culprits?

That sounds like crud in the tank blocking the pick-up. Crud is sucked up by pump, pick-up is blocked and fuel is cut off causing power loss, then suction reduces and crud falls to bottom of tank again. Darren

That makes sense. Also sounds cheap and easy to fix. Let's hope so.

Is it just me or is this problem becoming a bit more common? I've experienced it with my Td5, there are so many theories such as overheating, oil in loom etc. etc.

Could it be aliens? Laughing They are targetting electronically controlled Defenders Whistle in preperation for invasion. Shocked It's that or there's some new bits of faffing about with diesel at the pumps again, in our local Sainsburys the pumps have changed from "City Diesel" with yellow delivery pipes to plain "Diesel" with black pipes.

no additives. I always try to use fuel from BP or Shell rather than supermarkets. I remember there being a problem a few years back that - can't remember the final outcome, but I believe one of the supermarkets took responsibility and replaced several engines.

I've only done 7,000 miles so was loath to do anything that might kill the warranty. Do you think an additive might help?

think it was silicone in the fuel (possibly morrisons and / or tesco's)

was wondering if you'd used additives that alone might be fine with fuel but if mixed may cause problems?

It was silicone in petrol at Tesco, Morrisons and some Asda, it screwed up the lambda sensors.

IIRC silicone can be used as an anti foaming additive in diesel.

Report back from dealer:
Coolant hose leak, loss of coolant. I guess the lack of power was the ecu preventing the engine from overheating.
Replacement hose to be fitted today.
Is this likely to have done any long term damage to the engine?
What could I do to get an early warning about this in the future?
