That sounds like crud in the tank blocking the pick-up. Crud is sucked up by pump, pick-up is blocked and fuel is cut off causing power loss, then suction reduces and crud falls to bottom of tank again. Darren

That makes sense. Also sounds cheap and easy to fix. Let's hope so.

Is it just me or is this problem becoming a bit more common? I've experienced it with my Td5, there are so many theories such as overheating, oil in loom etc. etc.
Could it be aliens? They are targetting electronically controlled Defenders in preperation for invasion. It's that or there's some new bits of faffing about with diesel at the pumps again, in our local Sainsburys the pumps have changed from "City Diesel" with yellow delivery pipes to plain "Diesel" with black pipes. |

no additives. I always try to use fuel from BP or Shell rather than supermarkets. I remember there being a problem a few years back that - can't remember the final outcome, but I believe one of the supermarkets took responsibility and replaced several engines.
I've only done 7,000 miles so was loath to do anything that might kill the warranty. Do you think an additive might help? |

think it was silicone in the fuel (possibly morrisons and / or tesco's)
was wondering if you'd used additives that alone might be fine with fuel but if mixed may cause problems? |

It was silicone in petrol at Tesco, Morrisons and some Asda, it screwed up the lambda sensors.

Report back from dealer:
Coolant hose leak, loss of coolant. I guess the lack of power was the ecu preventing the engine from overheating. Replacement hose to be fitted today. Is this likely to have done any long term damage to the engine? What could I do to get an early warning about this in the future? |
