MIB make one. Retains in the same way as your tailgate on the left so I don't think you would need to change the way it's hung if you don't want to side hinge it.

I had a look on MIB website but it didnt have anything about it so i guess i am best to call them up...
Hows the best way to go about changing where the door in hung? do u need new hinges? how will the door then stay shut etc..? cheers |

yeah something like that... wasnt sure weather theres a way to just mount it on the tailgate without having to buy the big ungly side hinge thingy lol

The easiest way to make a side hung tailgate is to cut off the anti-luce loop on the drivers side and fit two standard rear door hinges. The anti-luce on the passenger side remains as the latch. A slightly more refined way is to cut down a rear door, as this way you get a nice latching handle (and lock, FWIW).
There's no reason why you couldn't bolt a standard rear door wheel carrier to either. If you go down the 'cutting a door down' route then it might already have one fitted. Bear in mind though, that the weight of the wheel will only be supported on those two hinges. If your truck is a normal runabout then that might not be much of a problem. However, if you're into serious playing then that weight will eventually break something. It's for this reason that rear doors are now fitted with three hinges rather than two from Series Land Rover days. It's also why people are recommending swing away wheel carriers, which carry the weight instead. A swing away carrier doesn't have to be expensive. Whilst there are some very nicely engineered examples out there that open with the rear door or avoid drilling the bodywork, for your application then a simple one from Paddocks for about £80 would almost certainly suffice. thanks again darren, as you can prob tell im pretty new to the whole defender scene etc so the help is grate.
im not going to be doing much off roading or playing around with my defender, just mainly using it as a daily work van. Im not to fussed on the tailgate being hinged as it is from the bottom so would i be ok to leave it as it is and to just bolt a sparewheel mount on? Im aware that it will be heavy to open once i have fitted the spare wheel but as the tailgate is on chains i dont think it will be a problem...? let me know what you think.. cheers  |

Tom, I am guessing you want to keep the tailgate as a 'drop down' where everyone is talking about changing it so it opens sideways?
Either as mentioned above- which is the safari-equip one. There is also the 'Sonic spare wheel carrier' which bolts only to the chassis so you open the spare wheel and then drop the tailgate. Value for money, yes you could just bolt a Discovery spare wheel carrier straight to your tailgate. This will make it VERY VERY heavy though. Easy to open, and the chains will possibly be able to hold it (well the chains will but maybe not what they are bolted to) but then when it comes to closing it will be a PITA. Glyn   |

The standard tailgate is not strong enough to have a spare wheel hung upon it, and if you wanted to do this your best bet would be to fabricate a replacement tailgate with reinforcement. You will also (probably) need to beef up the hinges and antiluces, and certainly the two stays.
In the good old days Land-Rover used to fit a variety of "tailgate-mounted" kit on vehicles, such as PTO driven compressors and generators etc. These usually consisted of frames which picked up on the tailgate mountings but the builk of the weight was inside the buck, and of course the old hinges etc were much stronger than the "value-engineered" modern equivalents. So it can be done, but may be more work than using a swing-away type carrier. Also don't underestimate the weight of a the tailgate and wheel, it won't be easy to open or close. |

PS, apropos Glyn's response. The Sonic3D (now Allisport) wheel carrier does not require any drilling to fit, and is very easy indeed to operate. It has a further advantage that it can be adapted to work with an IW canopoy's full width flap, which is often a problem with inferior carriers. I have had one fitted for the last two years and rate it as one of the best upgrades I have done.

Even if you could fix on the tailgate to still hinge down you would need to mount it very high
And if you plan on having a trailer behind it won't be a lot of good Just a tailgate is enough of a pain in that situation A swing away with a drop down tailgate is also a none starter with a trailer as you cant swing the wheel back before you drop the tailgate down as the swingaway hits the jockey wheel Making them hinge to the side is the best option I made a swingaway and bolted the tailgate to it for a series 3 some years ago as it ment they both moved together And it saved the price of safari hinges and the hassle of needing to open one then the other every time i needed to get in |
