Are you driving over or flying and renting?
Makes a difference which country you rent from at Geneva airport and when you need to buy an autoroute vignette. 1995 Defender 110 CSW 1971 SIIA Lightweight |

When we lived there, some weekends we used to tour around the lake, take in Evian, Yvoire & Emosson (dam), designer retail outlet at Aubonne.
Geneva has lots to see and do ... PM EricVV AND DONT SPEED ! |

@BPman. People always say that, but I was running late driving from Basel back to Zurich airport recently, so was pressing on a little. Had several people come up behind, and then past me that made me look like I was standing still! Could also hear many loud expensive cars of an evening that definitely weren't going within the limit!

Thanks everyone,
I am planning to drive all the way there actually, probably stopping in France around Dijon the night before we get to Switzerland. Will be going to Lyon and then the Bordeaux area after leaving Switzerland. Not sure about the outlet given current FX lol. But will try to pm EricVV. I guess I need to get the French toll thing and also the autoroute vignette. From the posts I have seen, everyone's been saying don't speed as the most important thing I actually originally wanted to bring something with some poke with all those alpine passes but I guess that's probably out of the question now... |

Speeding is ok, but paying the tickets you might get will cost big time. I paid 110 euros for a 13kmh over one time - that's a 20-30 euro ticket in Germany...

The vignette is only required if you use the motorway

I see, how are speeding tickets calculated anyway?
Also, on the Vignettes, am I right that you just have one that last for a year and there are no other options? |

Yes, vignette, the only option is the yearly one, 40 CHF. (fine is 200 CHF and you have to buy the vignette on the spot)
Speeding: https://www.ch.ch/en/driving-over-speed-limit/ and http://www.polizei.bs.ch/dms/polizei/downl..._radar.pdf The tagessatze is a day rate based on your income. Jail time is also a possibility. Also, speed traps are often very well hidden/camouflaged |

my old neighbour got a 3 month ban and 15% or 20% of his household income for 1 year fine (household income from himself and his wife) - Switzerland fined a guy US$360,000 - based in speed and income and there was talk about crushing his supercar ...

That's some hefty fine.. To be honest I tend to stick to the speed limit in foreign roads anyway unless I know the area well and actually I don't think I have speeded that much in the UK these days neither. I guess it might be because I drive the defender a lot these days..
I actually quite like that income based fine system, it kind off says you are not above the law even if you drive a Pagani etc... |
