if i remember correctly you can test them with the multimeter set to ohms, if you take the wire off the plug, touch 1 multimeter lead to the end of the plug and the other lead to a good earth. should the multimeter read 1 ohm or less? i cant remember! 
im not over keen on taking them out and testing them with a battery as not all heater plugs are rated 12v

Easier to check with clamp on ammeter.

Just remove the wiring from the plugs, set your meter to ohms/resistance (some have a setting to just beep when there is a dead short or some mild resistance)
Put one end of the probe onto the engine block/shaft of the plug that's poking out of the block (you can use this same earth point for all of the plugs as they share the same earth) Then using the other probe, touch the ends of the plugs in turn... if there is no reading at all, then that particular plug will be "open circuit" and duff. I'm not sure if there is a "bad and on its way out" reading, meaning that the plug will work ok-ish but not to its full capacity; I always thought they either worked or didn't. |

For the amount they cost and the hassle of taking the cable off vs taking them out I'd just replace them if you're worried.
