HELP ! Bonnet Release Cable Problem - SOLVED
Just tried to open Bonnet for quick inspection prior to MOT tomorrow, but release cable has parted company at the bonnet catch end. Big Cry

I now have the grille off, and the cable end is floating free at the catch but I cant see what it was attached to, or how to now get the bonnet open.

Anyone been in this situation before ? What tooling was needed to release the beast?

Any assistance via PM only please (for security) much appreciated

Thanks

Eoin

Not overly famililar with this cable but usually they have a "blob" on the end of the cable. Is it still there?

Solved The Problem!
Turns out there was no break at the catch end, got the bonnet open and started the investigation.

When the release handle was pulled it was VERY slack, but there was no movement at the catch end.

Followed the cable and lo and behold, half way along there is a device like a fuse holder which joins the TWO PART cable together. Open this device up and a small grey slider inside had fractured, and of course the two cables were no longer linked.

Its no more than a piece of plastic, just need to source a new one now !!!

Another brilliant design Rolling Eyes

Wouldn't it be better to source a cable long enough just to do it in one run? Or is there some good reason for the split?

Land Rover Defender Bonnet Release Cable - Front Section, FSE500080

The cable is in two parts to make a faster replacement when it does break.

If you find a picture, you will see that the "Fuse Holder" section is a hinged device, within which is a grey slider which links the two crimped ends of the cables. This plastic is quite hard/brittle and with heat from the engine and pull stress is going to fail before too long.

My 2007 Model has just turned 5 years old, so keep your eye on this part of the bonnet release.

Hope this helps someone else in future.
