Engel 45, loaded with food, making the right running noises, electronic temp gauge at 9c but does not seam to be cooling, temp going up and down by a few degress, but that's due to outside temp? Any ideas, compresser is running! Ideas?

Gas leakage? See if you can get it refilled!

Been through a repair of my 45 a couple of months ago.
First of all are you sure the compressor is running and not just the fan? (you should measure 38V on the compressor connectors) If so, the only thing as already said is the gas leak.(unlikely) If it’s only the fan that runs then you might have different possibilities - compressor stuck (voltage comes to pins but compressor is not running, measure current, this should be between 1.8 and 3 Amps AC. If higher the compressor is stuck and will eventually burn out the electronics if the board keeps going in protection mode for longer periods. Remember, compressor should run continuously, not for just a couple of seconds (mine was cycling 30 secs on then 2 minutes off) If it is cycling it is taking too much current making the board go into protection mode. BUT this can also be caused by a faulty board (as in my case) Measure the resistance of the compressor (disconnected of course) If I remember correctly it should be around 1.5-2.5 Ohm, anything less or higher is defected compressor. - Temp probe broken, measure Ohm value when disconnected and heat up by hand, you should see it varying (don’t remember values) - switch and settings varistor broken, measure ON/OFF contacts for switch function and voltage on varistor pins when connected and turning the knob; These should change as you turn and not jump / be interrupted. - Electronic board broken (if switch and temp probe are working, but no voltage on compressor contacts) No need to go further, the module is 1 unit and can only be replaced as a module. If you have a problem on 12VDC operation 90% chance the 220 connection will also not work as it used the same end-parts to operate the fridge. - If I remember correctly the Digital Temp indicator also connect to the board, switching off the compressor when temp is reached. Overriding the temp probe signal. So it can be the output of the indicator is faulty and keeps telling the board that temps are low enough. Engel has perfect service stations, although they are not that clearly advertised. If your importer is not able to help, Engel Australia will serve you directly. Oh, and shopping around for better spare part prices makes no sense, they are all the same worldwide. (ask how I know ![]() Good luck! ![]() |

Thanks guys, would seam the draw from the aux battery was not suficient which was due to my marine split charging system having a fault. The compressor and fan were working but not enough power to chill the unit.
Thank you for your help as I did us this to help eliminate some of the possible options, the beer and gammon was saved! ![]() ![]() ![]() Tack |
