A long shot, but could it be the centrifugal oil filter you can feel spinning?
Maybe an assistant to start the car and you have a feel of the filter housing? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Thanks Martin but it is a real shudder for a second or so - the whole vehicle shakes.

Perhaps an engine (or gearbox) mounting has broken? Part of the service around 100k is to check the mountings.

Thanks but we have checked all these and they are OK, it doesn't vibrate at any other time which would make me think it's an engine issue

Yes - we have fitted loads of these and the vibration was exactly the same before and after.

Hi - we have changed the injectors already for a known good set but I am going to swap the ECU and try that.

My Td5 runs unbalanced when in traffic, mainly if you have been closing the gaps as the traffic edges forward and occasionally you have that bigger gap where you accelerate and then just coast up to the stopped traffic. When that occours and you brake to a stop then it will run lumpy and unbalanced. It can also happen reversing into a parking space. I sometimes wonder whether there is a starvation of air to the inlet manifold due to the brake servo but the brakes are served by their own servo pump.

This seems to be a distinct consistent vibration mainly on switch off and start up- we have come to the conclusion perhaps the crank is a bit out of balance, it drives well otherwise and apart from block assy and head pretty well everything else has been changed.
