Noticed on the Mobilecentre website that they offer for the SVX, Fire and Ice editions the LED version of the rear turnsignals, which ex factory are still supplied as a clear lense with incandescent bulbs.
Has anyone with an SVX, Fire or ICE Defender made this conversion already, and is this then a straightforward replacement of the existing for the new lights? Using the same mounting plinths which are already ex factory on the vehicle, so two screws out and back in, nothing more? I see that part of the Mobilecentre kit is a 3 pin flasher relay to compensate for the lesser wattage of these LEDs. How does that work in reality, flashing rythm as should be, and why do they say that "trailer dash light function may be affected"? One last question to someone who has gone thru this experience, do these LED indicators have the required E marking? Here is the link to the item: http://www.mobilecentre.co.uk/index.php?ma...cts_id=451 If it all looks good, I plan to order them together with a set of stainless steel headlight bezels You never actually own a Defender. As I understand it the relay is purely to compensate for the non LEDs fitted to a trailer if you are towing, so all the lights continue to work. If you don't tow you don't need the relay. The lights are advertised plug and play. Just fit and forget no extra installation required.

So without towing the consumption today is 2x21W or 42W in total. After installation of the rear LED turn signal that will drop to something like max 26W total, assuming that the LED signal consumes not more than 5W (maybe even less?) You are saying that the existing turn signal flasher will accept these change without starting to flash at a much faster speed, similar as when one of the two bulbs would burn out? Did you fit the flasher relay which is part of the Mobilecentre kit? I believe that the click noise is even a legal requirement. Certainly here in Switzerland our ""MOT"" would give us a warning, if not worse You never actually own a Defender. Yes it's the one provided in the kit. I believe you need a visual or audible (or both) indication to be legal over here. For Switzerland..... who knows, you've some odd laws
For towing I think you need a tell tale warning to let the driver know a bulb has failed on the thing you're towing. So faster flash rate or something... No idea what the mobile centre set up does but Im sure Tim will be along to let us know. Or I'll build a trailer bulb when I'm next towing! Stu |

I have the MC flasher and it works well (full led on my car). Also MobleCentre sell ONLY ECE products. The best is do a ring to TIM CONSOLANTE, owner of MobileCentre (site Sponsor here), he is a very prepared and disponible person. I have been through this a few times
Unscrew the old lamp , plug in lamp screw new lamp in - less than a minute per side. We will supply gaskets which you would fit to the plinth but LR never bothered fitting them as standard. The lamps are ECE homolgated for rear indicator and marked as such. Take old flasher relay out and plug new one in Our flasher is fully electronic and flashes within the ECE designated rate, it is 3 pin so will work all exterior lighting functions including trailer electrics. Our flasher is silent as you have visible warning on the dash of indicator operation so do not require audible. |

When we were working on the first ever LED conversion for Defender back in 2005 / 2006 we tried various Chinese relays with varying success and in the end had a relay custom relay designed and built in Europe.
At the time we looked at the trailer light integration and after some investment decided on a generic relay that would suit many applications (Car. Truck & Motorcycle) and we went with a three pin unit. The infamous C2 pin controls the legend on the dash with a picture of a caravan - on a standard set up detects the additional load of a 21W bulb and illuminates the lamp. The biggest issue we found is the variation of trailers that can be towed behind the same vehicle, so some with LED indicators some without etc. this made making a generic relay with full C2 functionality a challenge. This is a challenge we overcame about four years ago with a self learning relay that measures the current draw via three flashes of the hazards this can be done with or without trailer connected. It is / was however uneconomical for the end user and required a new relay pack to be hardwired. In conjunction with the redesign of our 70mm lamp we looked at bulb failure i.e. where you are made aware that an indicator had failed, and worked on a system that is available to buy where you can monitor each individual indicator lamp whether it be on the vehicle or a trailer which has is plug & play for Defender and can be retrofitted but it comes at a premium. There are other ways to retain the trailer warning function such as buzzers and warning lights for less than £10 on EBay that should do the job |
