I would say the world is their oyster at that point. Land Rover are no longer part of Ford group and therefore don't gain from continued use of their engines unless they didn't have anything of their own..........BUT they do! They might as well have fitted their own 2.2 Litre Dicor VTT engine, which is suspiciously fitted to their 4x4s (Xenon). Driven through their gearbox and a Borg Warner transfer box (same as Range Rover).

And most importantly for the green people out there....... it is EU5

Most importantly for the diver: It has 140HP and 320Nm torque.... down a little on torque but power will make up for it.

TATA do have ties to Ford, but they also have ties to Toyota, Honda and other top vehicle manufacturers- what a vehicle that would become if it had a 4.5D-4D lump (still EU5) 286HP and 881Nm!!!

Defender = outgoing Big Cry so I expect LR went for the cheapest option, modifying the 2.4, so not requiring radical changes (excluding the DPF).

To those who have a 2.2, is LR's claim that it only needs 40 mph runs over short-ish distances to clean the DPF? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. The 2.2tdci in the new global Ford Ranger is the same engine as the Defender, Ford have aimed the new Ford Ranger to take the lions share of the pick up sales in Australia, South Africa and other such contries where thousands of people depend on their trucks ability and reliability just to get to town which may be hundreds of miles of extreme 4x4 driving. The 2.2tdci therefore should not be seen by the 2.4/Td5 crew as a lesser engine than theirs. If its good enough for the Ford Ranger its good enough for the Defender.

The issue is not technical, but it is us voting for darn idiots.

If LR chooses to go for another engine, they would have to file for reclassification of the EU classtype rating and this will be denied as we left handling power to these "Gutmenschen" in Brussels. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.

The 2.4 still exist EU5 on transit with DPF (I have one in the Company where I'm employed). Only, and I repeat it again, FORD decided, for cost optimization reasons, to reduce the engine offer from the 2.2, 2.4 and 3.2 Pumas to the new 2.2 and 3.2 Pumas (2.2 and 2.4 are so closer displacement)

and without change anythings else (gearbox, frame, ....) and without introduce a totally new engine/powertrain (new wharehouse management with a lot of new spares, new versions that means COSTS!!!)

In that way minimum cost, maximum result Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition

No, it's the other way around.

Needless to say, the ideal engine for the Defender would have been the 3.2 TDCi, not the 2.4 or 2.2. Crying or Very sad --

Even though I am happy with my 2.2tdci 110, if I did not need the 7 seats I might have gone for the 3.2 tdci Ranger. Now a Defender 110 with a 3.2tdci would be great and I think would sell better than the 2.2. If only Land Rover saw sense.

Yep, even the 'old' 3.0 TDCi from the old Ranger would have been more than adequate. But f-ing bean counters at LR Evil or Very Mad --

at 2000 rpm my 2.2 110 XSUtility is showing 60mph (Sat nav shows 56/57).
Fuel Consumption works out at around 28mpg - mileage 14500. Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

There were 2.4's until 2011. In the current continental 2012 list you don't find the 2.4 any longer for the standard Ford Transit. There is only an option left for Baseframes to built special vehicles on the 2.4 until 2013. Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.
