Side hinged tailgate and swingaway?
I'm looking at replacement options for my aging and cracked cut-down safari rear door.

Has anyone got a Mantec swingaway carrier in combination with a side-hinged tailgate type door?

The swingaway must move with the door, not be a separate pin/latch only operated from outside.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Most of the wheel carriers for pickups etc are latch and pin design for the drop down tailgate which is a design you do not want.

Mantec lists one for a half door but have not seen one/can not find a photo.

Bearmach does this version

Not suitable for certain hoods. Also has the old 'Pivlock'(?) latching mechanism so probably not what you want.

Safari Equip standard one for a pick up/soft top is a pin and latch design that you do not want. I will be at the factory early next week as we are having some specials/one offs made for various customers so I can enquire if they could make anything suitable for you.

If you let me know age of vehicle, your requirements, normal or large tyre, high lift jack mount, finish powder coat, galv or both etc I will find out what can be done.

Surely you just need a carrier that will work for a standard door? It won't know that there's nothing above the waistline. If you fit side hinges to a standard drop down tailgate then I can see that their may be a need for a small amount of adaptation where the carrier would bolt to a full height door, but I can't see it being much more than some spacers to take up the difference between the tailgate panel and where the door skin would be.

Alternatively, if you use another cut down door then it should be plug and play. Darren

The central plate off the wheel carrier is located just below the waist line. If a standard tailgate has been converted to a side hung door then it has an external central reinforcing rib. This means that some spacing will be required and possibly some reinforcement on the inside.

If it is a home cut down of a rear door then it would depend on how the top has been finished off/reinforced.

Safari Equip do a rear half door, I will have to find some pictures/information about it.

I'm keen to go down the route of a "proper" NAS type side-hung tailgate rather than another sawn-off safari.

A Mantec swingaway is, I think, the only carrier which fits with my combo of 50th rear step, my setup of NAS rear lights and the soft top.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I'm also interested in what would be the best swingaway option to fit in the future (If I ever go to Morroco and need more room inside the load area)! Regards

Doesn't look like that opens with the tailgate though, it's pinned on the left.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Is it not pinned to the latch on the left (the one that keeps the tailgate shut), if so, surely when you un-latch the tailgate, the tailgate and the carrier will swing open ? An engine to TDi for!

Yes, but as I said originally:

This is because my 90 has seats in the back and I don't like the idea of the rear door only being able to be opened from outside.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Have I read this wrong.... or are people over thinking this.

Do you just want a SW rear door, cut down to size, put capping along the top and then fit a Mantec spare wheel carrier? I think Safari Equip do something like this?
