Should a TD5 gearbox be noisy?
My TD5 makes a constant high pitched whistle/whine that is road speed related. It goes up and down in direct relation to road speed, and gets louder with more power, goes completely on over-run. The noise is the same regardless of gear selection. Its definitely coming from the gearbox area.

It whines above 30 mph, peak noise is at about 50mph, at 70 it goes away or is drowned out by engine/wind noise.

Its not a deafening noise, but it is noticeable. Many people have said its normal for the vehicle, others have said it should be a lot quieter. The car has had all the oils changed, but it made no difference.

If it is the transfer box, then it could be the excuse I need to get it changed for a Discovery box to lower the cruising revs.

Can anybody give me any advice to diagnose more accurately? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Difficault to say from your discription, but I wouldn't call mine noisy. I have a Rocky Mountain O/D and it makes a massive amount of difference to motorway driving. I would try to get a drive/ride in another TD5 to compare.

could be main 'box, transfer box or either of the diffs.

Diffs are easy to diagnose.... remove each propshaft (in turn) and take it for a spin with the difflock engaged, so you'll be either in front wheel drive or rear wheel drive.

If the noise stops then you'll know which it is.

As for the gearboxes, transfer box isn't hard to change. a few hours will see it done. main box is harder (and more expensive)

Thanks chaps. I think a ride in another TD5 is called for. I did drive a 2.2 Puma recently and it was much quieter. I know its the 6 speed main box, bit do they use the same transfer box? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

My transferbox whines when fully warmed up.
Never given any trouble.

Mine whines at the same speeds, more on 80kmh and less at 100kmh, then I canīt hear nothing at 120kmh, not even my thoughts.

I guess its just the way it is. Augusto
