I have a TD5 130 '52 plate with 80,000 miles on.
It is totally standard and has only ever been serviced by a main dealer. Recently it has started being very 'flat' from starting with hardly any rise in revs when the accelerator is pressed to the floor until 40 or so seconds have elapsed and then it is fine. I've replaced the accelerator with another from a trusted source (my other TD5 that is working fine) and this made no difference. Through reading this forum today I've guessed it my be the MAF sensor at fault ? - I presume I can swap this over from my other TD5 and see if it cures the problem ? Once sorted I'd like to improve the 'power' without spending too much, I've sourced an EGR blanking kit from a forum member but to be honest don't know if that is the first thing I should be doing or if it should be in conjunction with other bits - advice would be welcome |

Cheers Steve,
I'm pretty sure it's the MAF from further reading - I'm just trolling around now to get the best price on a Genuine replacement. It's very recently been fully serviced so no issues with filters etc. Changing the turbo seems quite a major upgrade, what is the best mod on a 'bang for buck' basis in your opinion ? |

The easiest way to test the MAF is to disconnect it and see if there is any improvement once the ECU revents to its default map.
Once you have acertained it is the MAF, its only worth replacing with a genuine one - I tried 3 cheap ones before I learnt my lesson. Once the new one is in, the duty rumor is that having an aftermarket filter (oil based) can serious affect the MAF. HTH, Ben 2002 Defender 110 DC |

Definatly use genuine I made same mistake of using non genuine and didnt last long. Theres no problem in trying the one from your other TD5 takes about 5 minutes to change only need a screwdriver. Easy job especially if youve done it 6 times (fed up with changing them!).
Be carefull with a remap as this can help to reduce the life of the MAF. Obviously depends on the remap some are better than others. However a good remap will improve economy and performance. Alisport can remap to your requirements - worth a call. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

I still have a similar problem with my TD5. Went down all the usuall suspects route, still got the problem. It's as if the turbo is waiting to kick in and when it does, boy does it take off.

Have a very similar problem myself
White smoke on startup when putting the power down. Lack of power for first maybe 30 seconds Then the power flies on. Changing MAF for genuine one within the next two days. Will report back Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |

Changed mine yesterday.. but still have similar problem. Don't think it's the MAF this time, can't be 2 in a month. Seems to be fine in the morning and colder days but if the ambient temperature is high (higher than normal !) power seems to be down then comes and goes.
Tonight checked air filter - clean Fuel pipes - no obvious kinks or damage No loose pipes or cables Turbo waste gate - appears to move smoothly No obvious leaks Only other thing I can think of is the injector wiring loom. Have noticed the occasional misfire on tick over and slight hesitation / coughing at low speed pick up. What are the symptoms of oil in wiring loom and should I have it at just 40000 miles ? 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

IRB Developments or Bell Auto Services ... Ian [IRB] and Pete [Bell] are without doubt the masters of the trade. With you being south like me, IRB are probably the easiest option [Sutton coldfield] But both are at Eastnor show this weekend Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Lack of power from startup and more so when cold is classic signs of MAF failure.
If you talk to Gary at Alive he may be willing to send out a MAF foc, let you fit and if it sorts it, pay him, but if not required you send it back to him. That's what he did for me And he's cheaper than the dealer for a puka MAF. They are quite delicate and can be knackered out the box, and oil covered air filters kill them, as does water Andy |

New MAF installed.
Engine was hot so started up normally. Much better power throughout the range of revs. Will report back on whether smoke has dissapeared on cold start up. Will Defender 90 XS TD5 (03 Reg) |
