PS
The Defender's now four years old and out of warranty. Any ideas how I stand on getting the lock sorted and the necessary reflash? |

hi,
you could try a nanocom or rovacom. my nanocom has an alarm menu allowing you to reset it and change various settings. they are about £200, but that probably equates to 4 trips to the dealership? |

Its the immobiliser doing its job, I just lock and unlock it two or three times quickly using the key fob thingy and bingo! it starts.
Its just another trick to check that you are qualified to own a Defender;and not some spoilt "softy handed" Puf |

Hi, If it is an immobilser issue, the red led (in dash) will stay on when you try to start, but the starter will be inhibited (i.e. no engine cranking).
The immobiliser doesn't stop the glow plug or eng man light. I would suggest you check the lucar connections in the relays under the driver's seat for a bad connection, one is the fuel pump, one the main relay. They may just need tightening a bit on the actual connections. Failing this check the main ecu plugs. Interesting about the reflash, I haven't heard about an issue affecting a non start in this way retified by a reflash? Regards Steve |

Only post 2002 ecu's (part numbers starting with NNN) can be reflashed, earlier (MSB) ecu's were non reflashable. 300TDi defender only ever had an EGR module, no main ecu (only on disco1 autos).
Why I was interested was because I usually read all the updates issues when I check software versions with T4 & never noticed anything concerning this particular issue. regards Steve |

I've been away for 12 days.
Engine cut a few times with fuel pressure light on, ETC light came on as well on one occaision! Wiggled every connection under driver's seat - no problems since. It's going into Caffyns for a check tomorrow - don't trust Guy Salmon any more. (Caffyns told me there isn't a reflash for mine.) Thanks for all the hints |

Definately an alarm ECU on discoveries - play with it alot you get different alarm sounders, lights etc etc - i seem to recall the alarm ECU hasnt changed significantly on the defender from the inception of 2 button fob Mike |
