Didn't think they were filled with oil anymore....
Not sure where you are in Oxford but James French can't be a million miles away from you. Despite being an independant he swapped one of these seals out for me free-gratis apart from the cost of the parts when I had a service done by him at the same time. I would therefore imagine the cost isn't great to have a qualified individual do it. By your own admission of your technical acumen get it done by 'someone in the know' maybe get your MOT done by them at the same time? Thanks K9F,
I should've said its a 52 plate TD5. I'm in Didcot and only about 2 miles from Frogisland so it'll more than likely end up there but I try to diagnose the fault my self first, purely to better my knowledge and ensure I'm not being ripped off by anywhere intake it. I'd love to give it a go myself but would need to have some one with me who had half a clue what to do. You think it's the cause of the sudden pull though? Thanks again mate. Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful! |

Don't under estimate yourself. Have a good look online and I am sure you will find some info or maybe even a guide to show you exactly what to do. If you don't feel confident though of course take it to some where where they know what they are doing. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

Thor,
Truth be told I am not sure if it is the cause or if it is what other internal damage may or may not have been caused. I am 100% sure that someone will see your post and enlighten us both. Either way the seal will need replacing prior to MOT. Have you topped it up and does it still pull? That for me would be a good starting point. *EDIT* This may help with regards to topping up.... http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=76287 Found this too... http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/LRhubseal.htm If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Something like this happened to me about twenty years ago. Driving along sharp pull to the left, almost took the steering wheel out of my hands.
It was the wheel bearing on the front left. stopped could not see what was wrong at first, drove it home. stripped and put new bearings on but had rub down the stub axel first as it scored it. Not say this is what is wrong with yours but thats where I would look first. Boy |

My first thought was seized bearing too. Darren

For starters I would jack the front up and support on axle stands, check the wheel bearings and swivels by grasping the wheel/s top and bottom and rocking the wheel in and out, spin the wheels and feel / listen for any graunching or roughness / brake binding etc, grip the wheels side to side and turn them lock to lock to check for play / tightspots etc. Steve.

had a similar problem on a 300tdi - it was the n/s top swivel bearing. once replaced everything was back to normal. BM52

What MOG said.... i'd also jack it up, give the wheel a spin around and feel what it's like.
Could either be wheel bearing or CV joint. the oil leak could point to a dry CV that's siezed up, or it could just be coincidence. |

i had a wheel bearing go on my old 300tdi. For a couple of previous miles there was a mild grinding noise coming from that corner of the LR then like Td5 Dan it was the catastrophic failure; complete lurch to the left and no forward motion (it was midnight and i had to walk a mile and a half home and recover the vehicle on a trailer the next morning).
highly recommend a slow short journey to a reputable garage to get this checked asap. |
